TOLL OF SHIPPING
LOSSES DURING WAR The latest summary of shipping losses from the outbreak of the war till September 27, published by the Sydney Daily Commercial News and Shipping List, indicates that British losses amount to 348 vessels totalling over 1,500,000 tons. The British losses, however, have been, more than offset by gains. German merchant losses are next on the list, 72 vessels being accounted for, totalling 398.887 tons. , The following table gives a summary of the losses announced up till September 27:
The latest Admiralty announcement reveals that total. German losses to September, 22—sinkings, scuttlings and captures—amounted to 1,043,000 tons. Italian losses to the same date are officially stated to be approximately 291,000 tons. About 33,000 tons of formerly neutral and now enemy-controlled ships were also sunk.
