RACING AND TROTTING

November 30 December 2.— Fending J C Special Trains A special train will run from Dunedin on each day of the Gore spring meeting Dark Flight The brilliant galloper Dark Flight has again bled during a gallop and the trouble discounts his value as a racing proposition. Nuffield .No further attempt will be made to train the A.J.C. and Victoria Derby winner Nuffield, who has broken down in his near fore suspensory ligament. The Epsom Although the Epsom Handicap was first run in 1865, a New Zealand-bred winner did ‘not turn nip until Nightmarch won in 1929 U. .Since then Autopay, Silver Ring, Synagogue and Gold Rod have been winners. , Heidelberg When Heidelberg ran in the Southern Champion Hack Handicap, run at the Riverton meeting, he carried 9.7 and with a better run would have been lg^tltE;;fnaney. In the Maungatua Hanofcap.-Jhe v.rmeets Islay Downs, who Was-third' to Cherokefe and Gay Lancer, on 11b better terms. The Reason ( Occasionally a betting coup is brought off in Australia that would be absolutely impossible in New Zealand. At Randwick recently a horse was backed from 33t01. 25 to I, 20 to 1, and 14tol. The closing price was 12 to 1, That is why a good horse is far more valuable in Australia than in New Zealand. Milford Prior to being raced over hurdles, Milford showed fairly good form on the flat, including a third in the New Zealand Cup, but he has so far been-a disappointment as a hurdler. At the Dunedin Cup meeting Milford 10.4 was second to Roseman 9. 2 i, and in the Spring Hurdles he will meet the Rosenor- gelding on about 91b better terms. Colours In- Australia, under the regulations, the only colours permitted are red, pink, dark blue, light blue, orange, yellow, green, purple, black, white and brown It is also laid down that combinations of two or more dark colours, or two or more light colours, are not permitted Neither are facings, cuffs, collar, pipings, seams, crosses, braids, single spots, or vertical halves. A revision of colours is necessary in this country. A Prolific Mare

Among the latest fdalings at Messrs Abbott Bros.’ Bridge Stud, Opotlki, is a chestnut colt by Lord Warden from Llanberis, dam of, Llangollen. Clarus, Solanio and Kilberls; " Llanberis was foaled in 1918, so that she has reached the age of 22, but she is carrying her years lightly and is in excellent condition. The colt by Lord Warden is her thirteenth foal and full of vitality. ■■ t ' . ■ Royal Descent ■ > ■ ■ -

The three-year-old Royal Descent died on .the property,.of, his owner, Mr A. J. McGovern, at Te Awamutu, a tew days ago, ty Bulandshar from The Begum, Royal Descent .was a brother to High Caste and a half-brother to Arvakur, jMazir and Stretto. He showed very promising form when he won the Midsummer Handicap at Ellerslie on January 1. but became affected in the wind and was sent out for a spell with a view to being operated upon later for the trouble American Market

Eight Eritlsh-bred yearlings brought top prices and an aggregate return of £10,600 at the famous Saratoga (U.S.A.) yearling sales, which lasted about a fortnight in August. Fifty-four yearlings realised £41,710, so that the average of the eight leading lots K was £1325, against £772 for the larger number. Top price was £3200, brought by a chestnut son of Hyperion and Gwyniad. The successful bidders were Jilr and "Mrs H. W. Lunger, of Delaware. A bay colt by Bahrain from Quick Action, bought by Mr W. P. Crysler. cost £1600.' Mr Crysler was one of the syndicate which purchased Bahram for £40!000. High Caste . - 1

High Caste, winner of the Epsom Handicap, traces back to Manto, one of the oldest and most prolific taproots in the Stud Book. According to the records, Manto was foaled in 1882, and her descendants have been enriching the turf and Stud Book ever since. The best-known of them are Altair, Bloodshot, Cissy. Cuirassier, Day Star, Disowned, Euroclydon. Foul Play, Frailty, Havoc. Niagara. Nonsense, Oudeis, Saint Hario, Siege Gun, Trenton, Vladimir. Zalinskl, and a very long list of others. The records of the Manto tribe take up five pages of the Australian Racehorse.

James Scobie The death of James Scobie. the successful horseman and trainer, removes one of the few remaining- links with the early days of racing in Victoria. He was riding in the days of Tom Hales and Tom Corrigan. when their names were on the tip of every sportsman’s tongue. Scobie won the Victoria Grand National Hurdles on Rhessus in 1882, tluj Grand National Steeplechase on Ruby in 1888. a mare said to be little more than a pony in height. The Australian Steeplechase was won on Euchre in 1883 and Blue Mountain in 1887, and right through his lengthy career Scobie was one of the most popular figures in sporting circles. Reflected Glory

In addition to the wins scored at Randwick on Saturday by High Caste and Beau Vife, New. .Zealand-comes on- for , some reflected glory by the fact that Pandect, the'Winner of the A.J.C. Derby, was produced by the New Zealand-bred mare Credit, a daughter of Paper Money— Killena, by Kilbroney—Ena. by Royal Artillery—Stressa. by Orvleto (son of Bend Or) from St. Mildred, by St. Simon—Lady Fitzjames, by Scottish Chief —Hawthorn Bloom, by Kettle Drum—Lady Alice Hawthorn. Pantheon was got by TraceryScotch Rose, by Your Majesty (son of Persimon)—Rose of Ayrshire, by Ayrshire —Pink Flower. Pandect is strongly inbred to St. Simon. Another interesting feature of Pandect’s pedigree consists in Topiary the dam of Tracery, being a sister to The Wag. the sire of Kilbroney. A Blot

One of the most serious blots on racing In New Zealand consists in the fact that Irrespective of weather conditions horses and riders are ordered to the post 20 minutes prior to starting time. The horses, usually are ordered into the birdcage about 25 minutes before starting time, and a few minutes later are sent out on the track with the result that it means a long -wait at the starting post It is not difficult to realise the effect on a highlystrung horse. This state of affairs fails in its object, which is to spur people up to bet,-but after the horses have left for the post punters usually waste 10 minutes or more weighing up the pros and cons ot the various members of a field. In other words, the bulk of the betting is not clone on individual opinion, but on what can be gathered in the way of information The chronic delay also suggests an undesirable element of suspicion There is nothing new about such an undesirable Stato’bf affairs, as it has for years been fathered by the Racing Conference, representing the collective wisdom of delegates.from the various clubs in New ZeaJandi- The Auckland Racing Club has developed sufficient courage and wisdom to break away from a rule which made horses and riders only worthy of the least consideration in part of the racing game

TROTTING NOTES By Sentinel FIXTURES October 12.—New Brighton T.C. Octobet 26, 28.—Greymouth T.C. Octobei 28.—Oamaru T.C. October 26, 28 or Octobei 26 30.—Auckland T.C ' xNovembei 2,—Wellington T.C. November 2.—lnvercargill T.C. November 12, 14 15.—New Zealand Metropolitan T.C. Willowbank Willowbank drifted in the early stages of the Methven Cup, but did good work over the final half mile to draw up and finish fifth. He has not reproduced his best form since going to Christchurch Regal The Methven Cup winner, Regal, was got by Grattan Loyal from Jenny Bell Junior, by Fout Chimes—Jenny Bell, by Bellman —Weary, by Brookholm —Lady Thorpe, by Young Irvington. Lady Thorpe is also the dam of Our Thorpe New Zealand Cup The handicaps lot the New Zealand Cup show 11 of the 19 horses nominated to bo on the limit and of these several are giving away time to be in It is within the power of the Metropolitan Trotting Club to refuse the acceptance of any horses assessed at 4min 27sec or 4mm 28sec, and (says the Press) unless there are several defections before the day of the race the club may exercise this right. Already early speculators have made their fancies and the preference is for Dusky Sound Great Jewel Fine Art and Southern Chief. Differem Powers

The executive of the Racing Conference recently issued instructions to clubs that stipendiary stewards must not be permitted to remain in the inquiry room while judicial committees are considering evidence and arriving at a verdict. There is reason to suspect that, this has been applied to an inquiry concerning a trotting event at a race meeting These races are run under the Rules of Trotting, and are not under the iurisdlction of the Racing Conference. Trotting Conference stewards are invested with greater powers than those appointed by the Racing Conference. and are not debarred from attendance throughout inquiries. In certain cases their concurrence is necessary before a penalty can be imposed. Exclusive Selection

Six selected mares are being mated this season with the American-bred pacer Josedale Grattan. They are Bexley Girl by Jack Potts—Raven's Girl: Del Potts, by Jack Potts—Delco: Crocus by Great Binggen—Doldrums; Nell Volo. by Peter Volo —Katie O’Neill; Evelyn Locanda, by Brent Locanda—Evelyn: and Kewpie. by Petereta —Matariki. Kewpie has a unique record as a producer, all of her progeny to race, eight in number, being winners Evelyn Locanda has also produced the winners Lynworthy and Lynn Rey Josedale Grattan, who is by Grattan McKinney from Miss Belwin is a high-class horse, and last season won £I6OO. notching five firsts, five seconds and a third in 14 races. In four starts this season he has registered a first and a second. Josedale Grattan will race at the Auckland Trotting Club s spring meeting this month.

The Trotting Cup One of the most extraordinary things in connection with light harness racing consists in the fact that the Metropolitan Trotting Club Invites owners to nominate for the New Zealand Trotting Cup. and at the last moment may debar a horse from starting. A preparation for the Trotting Cup means months ,of hard work for a horse to run the hardest two-mile race in the country, and it may be all for mothing if the right to start is refused. Training a horse to stay a hard race in the Trotting Cup may be detrimental to winning any other race at the meeting. It is doubtful if a chib in any other part of the world would be allowed to invite nominations and permit a horse to be trained for a most important race on the yes-no principle What has the Trotting Association to say about the matter?

Binnia Hero Mosaic, and St. Constant Reading headed the field to the home turn, Where Beau Vite dashed past and led along the straight He opened up a gap and finished full of running to win in the most brilliant manner by two lengths in the Australian and New Zealand record time of 2min 42sec. Pantler was three-quarters of a length away third and Dashing Cavalier fourth. Then came Binnia Hero and Cooranga, while Beeulivrs who looked well finished second last Beau Vites dazzling victory in the Metropolitan at Randwick to-day stamps him as a stayer whose class would be hard to find in Australia to-day. He appears, according to experienced turfites, to have a mortgage on the Melbourne Cup Not since the davs of Phar Lap has any norse achieved a double track record at a Randwiok meeting, as was registered by Beau Vite in the Colin Stephen Stakes and the Metropolitan His time of 2min 42sec for the mile and five furlongs to-day constituted an Australian and New Zealand record hitherto held by Young Crusader at 2min 42Jsee and established in 1937 Beau Vite has made all the Improvement expected of him as a four-year-old and is expected to provide a real threat to Ajax in Victorian weight-for-age races. His triumph in the Metropolitan was not relished by fielders who had him heavily couoled with High Caste and Beaulivre in the Epsom Beaulivre looked fit to-day, but weakened at three furlongs and beat only two home in the Metropolitan. Gold Salute came prominently Into the public eye again by a convincing win in the Shorts over a smart field, including, in the record time of fmin lOsec The Breeders’ Plate, for colts and geldings, went to the speedy chestnut colt Yaralla. by The Buzzard from Even Keel, while the consistent New Zealand-bred colt Pinero gained further honours by easily winning the Grantham Stakes The weather was delightful, and the course fast. RICCARTON NOTES JUMPERS AND TWO-YEAR-OLDS (.Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH. Oct. 7. The tracks at Riccarton have dried up in the last few days and unless more rain falls they should provide fast going While most of the old horses were restricted this morning to slow work, some interest was given to the proceedings bv th Donafiea rS (R. Register) went alone over six hurdles He travelled at a solid pace and his jumping was good Recollection (A Leach) and Sir Frederick (I. Walther) staged a very attractive effort over four hurdles. They kept close company all the way both horses jumping brilliantly, in the fastest performance seen over this ground in recent months. The three horses who were schooled this morning are due for early hurdle races. Sir Frederick will be in action at Wingatui. Donadea at Washdvke and Recollection at Trentham. . The starting barrier at the five-furlong post was at the disposal of! trainers this morning and a large number of young horses had some education with Mr P. D McNab in charge. The two-year-olds gave mixed displays, but some of them jumped out very smartly, showing that they are well-equipped tor this oarl oi point to the Riccarton team for the Dunedin meeting numbering about twenty horses. Glenora Boy has come on well after his slight setback, and M B Edwards intends to send him south H Nurse, on the other hand, has decided to keep Wild Coon tor engagements nearer home. Riccarton stables will provide a big contingent of horses for the Wellington meeting this month H and A. Cutts will have the largest team, as Winning Rival, Wild Fox. Shikari. Pleading and the two-vear-olds Willow Wood and Bird'of Prey have been nominated At least half a dozen other trainers from here will be represented. , . , The Vulture has shown some signs ol leg trouble, and F A. Roberts has found it necessary to give him a rest. Great Swoop has attracted a bit ol attention lately He was given a spell after he ioined J McLean’s stable, but he has been in work again for some time. His tasks have been mainly of the useful order but he is ready to sprint now and he looks the picture of good health The foui*-year-old mare Scold, in H and A Cutts’s team, is coming on nicely having made good progress since she resumed work after a spell She should be readv to show some form next month Although The Wrecker was eased up for a couple of weeks, he is a daily . visitoi to the tracks He is doing only light exercise but the brief rest will benefit him, as he had been in commission for a long time. He is very forward and he should be ready to show good form again before long

A. McAulay was a visitoi to the track at Rlccarton this morning and received a hearty welcome from many friends It was his first appearance for about six months as he' has been laid up with a broken leg the result of an accident at Greymouth in April He has made a good recovery, and though the right leg is stiff, he is able to walk well, with the aid of one stick.
