The shining cuckoo can now be heard in the bush of the Waitakeres, especially near Titirangi, although its arrival from th? Solomon Islands, where it spends the winter, is some weeks later than usual. The longdrawn call of the shining cuckoo has also been heard in suburban gardens, where it is always a welcome visitor in the spring. Like others of the species, it does not build its own nest, but uses those of small native birds, which are given the task of hatching the eggs and feeding the fledglings.
