STOLEN HANDCUFFS
MAN’S THEFT FROM BARRACKS SENTENCED TO PRISON TERM (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 7. For stealing a pair of handcuffs from a policeman’s bedroom, Stevens Francis Llewellyn Neary, aged 41. was sent to gaol for a month. According to the police. Neary was released from Paparua Prison on Saturday. and arrived at Lyttelton in a drunken condition. He was sent away from the interisland steamer at the wharf on account of his condition, and made his way to the Sailors’ Home, where he had previously stayed. He was unlucky, however, for the Sailors Home is now a naval and police barracks. Although evicted, he went back and stole the handcuffs from a constable’s bedroom. Later he was arrested for drunkenness, and the handcuffs were found among his possessions. His explanation was that he bought them from a Norwegian sailor.
