THE A.J.C. DERBY
PANDECT BEATS LUCRATIVE THE EPSOM TO HIGH CASTE EASY WIN FOR BEAU VITE (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) SYDNEY, Oct. 6. (Received Oct. 6, at 9 p.m.) New Zealand horses were right in the picture at the opening day of the Randwick spring meeting, held in ideal spring weather. An unprecedented incident happened in the Epsom Handicap, when Beaulivre, who was one of the most fancied for years, was suddenly pulled up when in a winning position a furlong from home. The explanation by the jockey. Munro, was that he thought Beaulivre had broken down irretrievably. He dismounted at the post. Beaulivre, however, walked satisfactorily to the enclosure and looked quite well. He was later examined by a veterinary, who reported that “ Beaulivre, when cooled off. disclosed no injury or abnormality.” The huge circle of Beaulivre's admirers was chagrined by the untoward happening. With Beaulivre out of the way High Caste ran on to a well-deserved Epsom victory. The A.J.C. Derby saw Nightbeam unruly at the post, finally twisting a plate on the near foreleg. He had to be taken back to the saddling paddock to have the plate adjusted, causing a delay of 18 minutes in the start of the Derby, in which he ran a great race but faded out in the straight. The time for the Derby was extremely slow. Beau Vite had an easy victory in the Colin Stephen Stakes, in which he led over the last mile.
