NOTES ON THE RACING (Special ro Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH. Oct. 5. The Methven Trotting Club held one ot its best meetings to-day in fine but cold weather, there being a large attendance to witness some excellent' racing. Some big (teles were seen, two races having to be divided , but it was a bad day for backers, the favourites faring disastrously in most of the events. South Canterbury staoles had a great day, as they won five races. Certissimus, a much-talked-of three-year-bid in D. Teahen's South Canterbury team, was a hot favourite for the Drayton Handicap, and he showed that his reputation was well deserved. After showing an inclination to go off pacing, he soon corrected his gait. He lost several lengths When he broke after going a furlong, but he made up his ground quickly. When two furlongs had been covered Westcliff, Certissimus and Royal Parrish had cleared out from the field. Westcliff and Certissimus drew away from Royal Parrish three furlongs from home and had the finish to themselves Certissimus dashed into the lead 100 yards from home and won easily He is a grand type of colt, who looks like developing into an outstanding trotter.
The Westward Ho Handicap was run in divisions. In the first Clonard followed Inquisition for seven furlongs, and then took the lead, Boreas and Inquisition following him to the straight, with Hardy Oak and Direct Bingen making up ground. Clonard held his place in front and won easily. Inquisition and Boreas tired in the last furlong, leaving Hardy Oak to stage a great finish for second place. Spangled Maiden set the early pace in the second division with Channel Fleet, Native Man, Eileen Grattan and Happy Man following. Happy Man moved up along the back, taking the lead three furlongs from home. Spangled Maiden, and Native Man followed him to the straight, but Happy Man was not again troubled, while Spangled Maiden beat Native Man easily for second. Willow Bank and Stormtost, who were the favourites, broke at. the start of the Methven Cup, but gradually made up their lost ground, while Privateer tangled badly early in the contest. Regal went off slowly, and was a long way back after half a mile, but at the end of a mile and a-half he started to. make up ground fast. Happy Locanda was in charge at this stage, followed by Stormtost, while KiiYea, Black Surprise, Willow Bank and Zincali were handy. They ran like this to the straight, but a furlong from the post Zincali was second to Happy Locanda. Then Regal appeared on the scene, having made a fast run from the home turn. In a good finish Regal.won by half a length from Zincali, who beat Happy Locanda by a similar margin. The Avonmore Handicap became a duel for the last three furlongs, and Pleasant Guy just stalled off Bronze Eagle, a muchdiscussed Addington pacer. Fragment took the lead after two furlongs, with Bronze Eagle. Tokalon, Jacose and Scenic Gem handy. Along the back Pleasant Guv dashed up on the outside to join Bronze Eagle, the pair going on from Fragment, Tonioro. Jacose and Mahoe. A furlong from home Fragment retired. Pleasant Guy and Bronze Eagle drawing away to fight out an exciting finish, in winch Pleasant Guy was going a trifle the better of the pair at the finish. Mahoe stayed on best of the others, to be a moderate th The Mount Harding Handicap had to be run in divisions. In the first. Bay tax soon took charge, with Mortlake. Mackscot Sabu and Wee Pal being his nearest attendants. Racing for the straight Baytax and Mortlake had Sabu in strong pursuit. Mortlake was beaten a furlong from the post, and Sabu challenged Baytax. whom he beat by a neck after a sharp tussle. The Oamaru-tramed Irish Dawn, after being seventh for a long way finished with a strong run in third place. The second division saw Erin's Lad, after being, well back early, come with a fast run over the last half-mile, to beat Burt Scott comfortably. Royal Rufine looked like being in the money, but tired in the last hundred yards. Marco Polo putting in a smart run to gain third money. . „
Royal Parrish won the Riverbank Handicap after leading all the way, but his task was made easy when Milestone, Windsor Lad, Kilmorick and Patti Nelson broke in the last half-mile, after being handy to the leader most of the way. Half a mile from home Royal Parrish and Windsor Lad were challenged, but Patti Nelson broke. Milestone then took second place, but broke under pressure a furlong from home Kilmorick was next to put in his claim, but he and Windsor Lad broke when they threatened danger, leaving Royal Parrish to win easily, with Windsor Lad and Kilmorick In the places. Mazaire was the early leader in the S G. Holmes Handicap, with Colonel Axworthy. Huguenot, King’s Jlibilee, Lament. Rowi and Kilrea next. The last-named pair moved up at the home turn. Thev headed Mazaire a furlong from the post and went on to stage an interesting finish Rowi winning by half a length, while Mazaire was two lengths back. Panquitch began slowly in the Mount Hutt Handicap, but ran away from the opposition at the finish. - Refund soon took the lead and was out clear a furlong from the post, with Macgregor, Panquitch, and Siege Gun in hot pursuit. Refund was challenged a little farther on by PanOtiitch Refund broke and fell, leaving Panquitch to romp home an easy winner from Macgregor who beat Siege Gun comfortably.

Niggei Boy There was more than the judge who knew that Nigger Boy won at Hastings The win was well anticipated in other parts of New Zealand.
Friesland Friesland, the winner of the Thompson Handicap of 1937, is reported to be galloping well in his training Beaupartir A report from Sydney stales that Beaupartir is to be sent back to New Zealand by an early boat. A Sensible Move An important departure from custom has been decided upon by the committee of the Auckland Racing Club. In order to shorten the period between race 1 - and the day’s proceedings, as well as to save horses and riders from being so long in the birdcage and on the racetrack, the usual birdcage parade will be eliminated, and the horses sent towards the “ Hill," from where they will do a preliminary up the straight, in reverse direction to that hitherto adopted, and proceed round to the starting point It is hoped that this will enable the first race to be started each day hall an hour later than usual and the last event to be run off at the usual hour. New Zealand Cup II stands as rather a compliment to the handicapper that all the horses handicapped at 8,0 or over remain in the New Zealand Cup. There are two exceptions. One is Peerless, now in Australia, and the other Royal Appellant, who was reported to be under a special preparation for the race, but probably unsoundness put a stop to it. Thennidor. who has always shaped like a stayer, missing but the rest of the absentees do not include anything regarded as a ttkely winner over two miles in the big iaee at Riccarton. The Buzzer In some quarters The Buzzer is regarded as remarkably well treated in the handicap ior the New Zealand Cup He was not placed in four starts last season and in the previous one did not win in eight starts. He was second wiUi 8 8 to Arctic King in the New Zealand Cup. ana third In the Metropolitan with 8.11 Tilquestion arises as to whether a hoise should be handicapped on supposition and somewhat ancient form or if frequent defeat should be balanced bv reduction in weight. The Buzzer may win the New Zealand Cup. but with an increase of weight on form two years old he is entitled to success The Randwick Classic
New Zealand has produced several winners of the A.J.C. Derby, though none for some years Eight horses owned in New Zealand to win have been Bonnie Scotland (1892), Noctuiform (1905), KilDoy (1916). Biplane (1918). Gloaming (1j1.)) Cupidon (1921) Ballymena (1923), ana Prince Humphrey (1928), biu Biplane. Gloaming, and Prince Humphrey were Australian-bred. To make up for them Dominion-bred winners owned in Australia have been Nordenfeldt (1835), Phar Dap (1929). Ammon Ra (1931), Theo (19.14). and Homer idead-heat in 1933).
Star Attraction)* Additional interest is lent to the Dunedin’s spring meeting by the fact that New Zealand Cup candidates in Royal Chief, Capricious, Passaform, Sparkle, Swordstick, Doubleack, Settlement. The Raker, Glenora Boy, Heidelberg, Lord Puck, and Airline are booked to race at Wingatui. A further attraction will be supplied by Doria, Spanish ■ Lad, Nightcalm. Dark Flight, Gold Flight, Don’t Forget, Rebel Mate, Hearth, and Toro Koura, who are nominated for the Stewards' Handicap, and will be seen in action at Wingatui. From the above it will be seen that quite a galaxy of talent in the racing world will be seen out at Wingatui. and no doubt patrons of sport will be keen to view the form and appearance of the horses with such important engagements ahead. A still further attraction will be supplied by the fact that quite a number of smart two-year-olds are booked to make their debut under silk, and indications suggest that it will be the best spring meeting ever held at Wingatui.
English Fillies Arrive The two English fillies purchased for Mr J. G. Alexander, of Maxwell, by Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., have arrived safely at their destination. One is a half-sister and the other is closely related to the great sire Beau Pere. They are'both extraordinarily fine types, and Mr Alexander is delighted with them. Both are two-year-olds. The chestnut filly, which is a half sister to Beau Pere, and of course to those other sires which have been brought to New Zealand. Mr Standfast, Gay Shield, and Dink, is probablv the first daughter of a classic winner to be brought to the Dominion. Cinna, the dam, won both the One Thousand Guineas and the Coronation Stakes, and was second in the Oaks. Her best performer on the turf was Buckler, the brother to Mr Standfast, whose victories include the .New Stakes at Ascot. Cinna is the dam of eight winners. Her chestnut daughter is by Nothing Venture, who won 14 races, value £B3BI. He is a sire of the St. Simon line, and is by Prince Galahad, who is the sire of the dam of Ajax. This grand type of filly is very well developed and landed in splendid order. She looks certain to gallop, and ma" be tried on the turf in New Zealand before being relegated to the paddock. The second filly, a lovely quality brown, is out of Cinna’s daughter, Cineraria. She is by Diomedes. She met with an accident and could not be trained. This is her second foal. Her sire, Diomedes. was a brilliant horse of the Sunbridge line. He was unbeaten as a two-year-old, and continued to show great brilliance at three and four years. Amongst the horses he defeated was the now famous sire Pharos. His stake winnings totalled £11,953. Of the two fillies, the brown shows rather more quality, having a lovely head, fine balance, strong loins and wide deep quarters. She is by Obliterate, sire of The Oaks and Ascot Gold Cup winner Quashed. Obliterate was a brilliant two-year-old, won five races as a three-year-old v and as a four-year-old won the Northumberland Plate, of two miles, and other races, and ran second to Solario in the Prince of Wales Stakes. He is by Tracery from Damage, a daughter of Limond’s sire, Desmond. These two fillies are undoubtedly two of the most valuable that have ever reached the Dominion, and should with any luck at all establish successful branches here of this great line, for Cinna herself was one of the best bred mares at the stud in England, being by the champion sire Polymelus from the famous rnare Baroness la Leche, which sold for 7500 guineas. She was by the Derby winner Ladas from Le Fleche, which won 16 races of a value of £34,703, and sold at auction for 12,600 guineas. She was the dam of the great sire Chaucer, and was a sister to Memoir, which also won The Oaks and St. Leger. Another sister in Maid Marlon was the dam of Polymelus, five times leading sire in the United Kingdom. Coronach The Derby and St. Leger winner Coronach arrived in New Zealand in wonderful order, and has continued to thrive in his new home at Mr J. G. Alexander’s Cranleigh Stud, Maxwell. He has already been inspected by a large number of enthusiasts. Mr Alexander is only too pleased to show the horse provided he receives notification beforehand of impending visits. Coronach, who won £48,225 in stakes, and is therefore easily the largest money winning horse to be exported from the United Kingdom, has now sired the winners at Home and abroad of approximately £120,000. He won all his races in running away fashion, and when a three-year-old was described as one of the finest-looking horses in the history of the turf. He matured into a magnificent horse, and everyone who sees him is delighted that such a type of thoroughbred has come to these shores. He is not far short of 17 hands high Put is magnificently proportioned, and impossible to fault. His colour is golden chestnut. Mr Alexander states that he is a perfectly-mannered horse, and has settled down to his work n grand style. The number of mares to be mated with Coronach this season is strictly limited Next season, however, more bookings may be taken. Already applications have been made to book mares for as far ahead as 1942. The British Bloodstock Agency, who arranged the shipment o f Coronach to New Zealand, have now Instructed Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., who imported the horse for Messrs John Donald and J. G. Alexander, that Mrs Macdonald Buchanan, the owner of Coronach, has agreed that the horse should be transferred into the names of the breeders stated. While nominallv Coronach remains the possession of Lord Woolkvington’s daughter, it is certain that the famous English classic winner will remain in the Dominion to the end of his days.

Out- of Order One of the most prominent figures in the light-harness world in Australia was the centre of discussion when at a meeting of the New South Wales Trotting Club the chairman. Mr E. A. Ireland, ruled out on a point of order a motion by Mr J. Culbert that the disqualification imposed on Mr W J. O’Shea be immediately lifted, and that all reference to his disqualification be expunged from the books ot the club. Mr O’Shea sold all his trotting stock after his disqualification, which aroused a great deal of criticism. A Notable Increase A correspondent draws attention to the fact that for the first time in its history the committee of the Forbury Park Trotting Club has agreed to an increase of slakes without any opposition being successfully made. In recent years any suggestion in that direction has always been opposed, and the recent increase is all the more remarkable when other clubs are satisfied to continue to maintain the stakes of last season A Change J J and E. N. Kennerley. who were the leading Epsom trainers last season, have transferred their large team of horses to Papatoetoe, having taken over the property where the late W. Gall trained for many years. The change has left a considerable gap in the ranks of horses trained at Epsom, as they have about 20 trotters and pacers under their care A Difference Revenue amounting to £71,260 was received from greyhound racing by the New South \yales Trotting Club last year The profit for the year on 26 meetings was £4461 Trotting was not so profitable from the club's point of view. Although the club received £3525 for the rent of the course from the greyhound section, and also £BO2 lor the renting of the tolalisators, the loss on the year’s transactions was £735. Stakes for greyhound racing amounted to £IB,OOO. Trotting revenue amounted to £24,398, but the prize money was £13,000. Accumulated funds arc: Trotting section. £51,699: greyhound racing section, £1379. From greyhound racing £31,960 was paid in taxes to the Government: taxation on the trotting activities was £3567. Conditions In the conditions for the New Zealand Cup, which has been assessed at 4min 26sec, appears the following:—Notwithstanding payments for nominations and acceptances having been made, the committee reserve the right to select the horses which shall go to the post, the selections to be made immediately after final payments have been made. -All fees paid in respect to any horse not selected shall be refunded by the club. Owners nominating horses assessed on 4min 27sec or 4min 28sec are advised to nominate in other races on the same day for which such horses are eligible. In the event of any horse so nominated being selected for the New Zealand Trotting Cup, and not starting in the other races on the same day, all fees paid in respect of such other races will be refunded.
NOTES FROM INVERCARGILL GOOD GALLOP BY CHANDELIER (Special ro Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, Oct. 5. A number of interesting gallops were recorded at Invercargill this morning, and a feature of the proceedings was a smart two furlongs by the Salmagundi—Brightmark two-year-old gelding Chandelier. The weather was overcast, but calm, and the course proper next the rails, where all the fast work was done, was in great galloping order, though it could not be termed fast.
Milford galloped to the five and came home from there in company with Anglo Irish (Sir Simper—Bridget) in Imin 6 2-ssec. the last four in 53 l-ssec. Both horses were doing their work nicely over the concluding stages, and Milford looks a picture. Doubleack and Sir Denis were doing their work well together at the end of a mile in Imin 49 3-ssec, the first four in 55 3-ssec and the last four in 54sec.
Anglo French appeared to be doing it slightly better than Royal Money over the concluding stages of five furlongs run in Imin 6 l-ssec, the last four in 53sec. Mona’s Song and Susie took Imin 51 4-ssec to cover a mile, the first four in 55 l-ssec and the last four in 55 3-ssec. Mona’s Song pulled hard in the early stages and finished under a nice hold.
Colonel Rouge and Eire’s Ruin were to have gone six furlongs together, but the latter bolted with her feather-weight rider, and Colonel Rouge was not sent against the watch, taking Imin 25sec for the full distance and 56 3-ssec for the last four. Colonel Rouge bears a bright and healthy appearance, and should not be long in striking form. The four-year-old gelding by Paladino from Sweet Memory and Navua ran six furlongs in Imin 20 3-ssec, the last half in 55 3-ssec. They finished together, but the Paladino novice looked to have it on his mate slightly. Princess Gainsborough and the three-year-old gelding by Nigger Minstrel from Queen Balboa ran three furlongs in 41 l-ssec, and were not knocked about.
Chandelier (Salmagundi—Brightmark) beat the colt by Blatherskite from Charmaine over two furlongs in the smart time of 24 2-ssec. From a moving start they ran together for about a furlong, and then Chandelier drew away to have a three lengths’ advantage at the post. Both youngsters were asked for their best, and Chandelier was doing his best work at the finish.
Melodist and Astral Flame beat Filibeg comfortably over five furlongs in Imin 7 2-ssec, but Filibeg was inclined to hang out. The first two furlongs took 25sec and the three 38 2-ssec, and both Melodist and Astral Flame completed their task in pleasing style. Melodist, who is the first foal of the New Zealand Cup winner Steeton to go into training, is a fine type of filly, and is showing plenty of promise. The three-year-old half-brother to Western Song and Noko completed three furlongs in 40sec. Both did their job well. Wild Career and Southern Light, both with over 9st, ran six furlongs in Imin 22 l-ssec. the last four in 55 4-ssec. Wild Career shapes as if he will come to hand quickly. Sailing Lady was responsible for one of the best gallops of the morning when she left a mile behind in Imin 48sec. She was assisted over the last six by Erin’s Star in Imin 19 3-ssec, and the last four in 54 4-ssec, and was under a strong hold practically throughout. Sailing Lady has lost none of her brilliance, and it remains to be seen whether she will repeat it with the colours up. Gold Robe did his work well when he beat Aspire over five furlongs in Imin 7sec, the last four in 53 2-ssec. The Nigger Minstrel gelding bears a more solid appearance than last season, and he could have improved on this morning’s effort. Lucky Feather ran four furlongs in 53 2-ssec, and this gallop completed the fast work.
Heidelberg and Sparkle were not noticed at the track, and this was the second galloping morning that the former has been absent during the regular hours.
Trainers had tire use of the course proper next the* rails at Riverton this morning, and the going, if a bit on the dead side, was good. .Viking gave another good display over two of the pony fences. The Lord Warden gelding has built up lately, and looks particularly well. Boaform appeared to be doing it a little better than Airdrie over seven furlongs in Imin 35sec, the last four in 55sec, but it was a good gallop for Airdrie, who was carrying round about lOst. Peony Rose was let off with pace work the reverse way. There is nothing wrong with her, and she will probably be galloped to-morrow. She is in great order. Spanish Lad was much too good for the two-year-old Desert Maid over half a mile. Getting away to a flying start, they ran the half in 51see and the last' three in 38sec, the filly being some three lengths back at the finish. It was rather a big task to set the two-year-old, as both were carrying about 7.7, and Spanish Lad is one of the best sprinters down this way. Spanish Lad seemed to come over on the youngster in the straight and squeeze her back.
Gay Flight reeled off three furlongs in 38sec. She was kept up to her work throughout, and shaped better than ever Shanty Man, carrying about 9.10, and Irish Ruler ran four furlongs in 51sec, the last three in 37sec. Shanty Man had a neck advantage at the finish. Rodeur and Southern Sail left the mile barrier from a flat-footed start, running the first furlong in 15sec, two in 27sec, three in 39sec, ; and completed four in 53sec. Southern Sail showed up in the early stages and is a good beginner. Dark" Flight and Gold Flight jumped away from the five, running the first furlong in 12sec and two in 25sec. and Gold Flight completed the distance in Imin 6sec, Dark Flight stopped near the three, having burst a blood vessel. The McLean Stakes candidates Sing Sing and the Man’s Pal—Set Sail filly were not worked this morning, and they will probably be galloped to-morrow.
Horses in Mr W. E. Hazlett’s team have been named as follows:—Hotch Potch (Salmagundi Glentruin’s Daughter). Chandelier (Salmagundi - Brightmark), True Range (Salmagundi—Direct Hit), Erinview (Colonel Cygnus—Wild Erin). Anglo-Irish (Sir Simper—Bridget).
RiCCARTON NOTES WiNGATUI TRIALS (Special ro Dailv Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 5. The conditions were ideal for the work at Riccarton this morning. The plough had dried up, but was not used much, most of the galloping being done on the outside of the trial grass track, which was in excellent order, though not yet really fast. Candidates for the Dunedin meeting provided most of the interest. Winning Rival ran nine furlongs, the last mile in Imin 44 4-ssec, after doing the first half in 50 l-ssec. Wild Fox finished alongside her. after joining in for the last seven furlongs, but Winning Rival was going comfortably. Don’t Forget registered Imin 17 3-ssec for six furlongs, the last four being done attractively in 50 4-ssec. Shikari and Wild Coon were mates over seven furlongs, the first three in 39 3-ssec and the full journey in Imin 29 3-ssec. Shikari was nearly a length in front and finished well. Royal Chief and Doria were not at top while doing six furlongs in Imin 18 2-ssec the last four in 52sec. Capricious beat Settlement by half a length over a mile in Imin 45sec, the last half in 52sec. Capricious is coming on nicely in her preparation.
Pleading was responsible for the best slx-furlong spin of the morning, Imin 16 3-ssec, finishing solidly to do the last half-mile in 50 l-ssec.
Jolly Time set the main for halt a mile by registering 49 2-ssec. Willie Win todk 52 2-ssec, going easily.' Lockit ran a mile in Imin 48 l-ssec, going at an even pace throughout. He is progressing well. Wardress beat Haughty Winner over six furlongs in Imin 19sec, but they were not ridden out. Dictate and Counterlunch followed in Imin 17 4-ssec, with the former in front. Lord Kinnoull held Welsh Fusilier safely in Imin 19 2-ssec. while Density went easily while registering Imin 18 3-ssec. Trench Fight dashed over half a mile in 50sec, which Roy Bun and Skyrena equalled, while Night Glass went up the back in similar time.
Royal Lancer and Gold Don pleased over six furlongs. They did the first two in 25sec and were going well till about a furlong from home, when they were cased up, so their Imin 18 2-ssec was a useful effort.
Recollection. Night Dress and Sir Frederick were in that order at the end of a mile in linin 44 2-sscc. a good gallop done at an even pace. Several two-year-olds were sent over sprint courses. Salutation drew out to beat Full Pitch over three furlongs in 36sec, a very good performance Blue Bouquet and As Required, finishing bn terms, took 37 2-ssec, Bird of Prey, after giving a start, beat Willow Wood over half a mile In 50sec. Palfrey beat Verlagia in 51sec. Sovereign Lady and Muffler, who went on the plough, were well matched over seven furlongs in Imin 30 4-ssec. the last half-mile in 51 3-ssec. King's Toast reeled off six furlongs in Imin 17sec, Sweet Mystery joining in for the last five Glenora Boy, Kilrobe, Roy Bun and Skyrena are unlikely to fulfil their engagements at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting
DUNEDIN SPRING MEETING There was a keen atmosphere at Wingatui on Saturday morning, and training operations carried more interest because of the approach of the Dunedin spring meeting. The inside grass tracks were in use for training operations. The trestles on the inside grass have been moved in towards the middle of the track and this fact makes a bit of difference to the .time recorded in a gallop. If a horse gallops near the trestles the going is much slower than near the rails, where the ground has been worn bare. The course proper was not open except for two-year-olds engaged at the meeting. My Mistake and Flippant opened proceedings by galloping six furlongs in Imin 19sec—the latter saving ground at the turn. Araboa and Silent Flight sprinted half a mile in 51sec on the sand. Silent Flight was struck out of the Trial Handicap on the appearance of the weights Straightdell and Chatterbug travelled over five furlongs on the sand in Imin 6 2-ssec Silver Lily, on the rails of the course proper, sprinted three furlongs in 37 4-ssec and pulled up well. She is well forward in condition for her engagement in the McLean Stakes. Spearthrust and Gay Lancer left six furlongs on the grass behind them in Imin 19 2-ssec. Spearthrust went near the trestles and Gay Lancer wider out on the more firm going. Sir Amyas, Milton Abbas and a Roydon gelding broke away from the six-furlong post and ran five furlongs in Imin 4 3-ssec Sir Amvas was galloping near the trestles . The Palantua filly cantered and then ran along on the rails of the course proper. Night Pal, working near the trestles on the Inside grass, where tire distance is short, left seven furlongs behind in Imm 28 4-ssec and six furlongs in Imin 15 3-ssec, _ ■ ~ , Taxpayer and Irish Colleen travelled together over six furlongs in Imin 18 4-ssec on the grass. Hanlon and Sir Hugh broke away at the mile post and put up Imin 46sec for the distance, the last seven furlongs in Imin 33 2-ssec. . Norseman. Islay Downs. Strip ana others got through lenient tasks.
