TAIERI HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

SPRING SHOW The Taieri Horticultur: 1 Society held d.s annual spring show on Saturday. Though not a big show, it presented a wealth of bloom. Mr Holland had on exhibition a very attractive stand of spring flowers — freezias, boronias, primulas, and polyanthus. Mr J. F. McCartney (president) and Miss M. Swallow (secretary), aided by an energetic committee, were responsible for a well-conducted and artistically-displayed show. The proceeds were in aid of the Red Cross funds. Mr Fountain, of Dunedin, judged the flowers and vegetables. Speaking of the former, he said that cut (lowers were well represented, and contained many wellgrown seasonal blooms. Considering the advanced season, tulips were well represented, and were true to colour. A feature of the show were some well-grown polyanthus and primroses, both in dark and light shades. They were excellent trusses in quality and size, and all that could be desired in that class. Owing to the lateness of the show, the narcissi w'ere not up to the usual standard. Miss Middleditch (Dunedin) judged the decorative work, which was generally of a very high standard. There were some excellent bowls and vases. The flowers used were all of good quality. Special mention was made of the artistic work of Miss McPherson. There were some promising exhibits in the children’s section. Miss.E. Smellie, who judged the industrial section, commented on the paucity of entries in aduit classes, but remarked that the quality was high. The children’s section was particularly good, especially the frocks made by hand from Standards V and VI. Knitting entries were also highly commended by the judge. The premier bloom in the show was shown by Mrs Gillon with a beautiful specimen of leedsii. The collection of narcissi was won by Mrs E. Pilling. Both first prizes in single and double hyacinths were won by Mrs M. Brown. Miss McPherson won the first prize for collection of spring flowers and for flowering shrubs.
