BUILDING ACTIVITY

The value represented by building permits issued in the larger centres during July was £809,042, an increase of £35,006'' above the total for June, but a decrease of £502.573 below the figure for July, 1939, which, however, is the highest total yet recorded since monthly figures first became available in August, 1925. Permits issued in July for the erection of new dwellings numbered 469, compared with 555 in June and 621 in July, 1939. Included in the dwelling figures for July, 1940. were 223 houses, the construction of which was begun by the Housing Construction branch of the State Advances Corporation, which, during the month, also began operations on 26 new dwellings in other districts.
