SPAIN'S ROLE

EARLY ANNOUNCEMENT THE ROME DISCUSSIONS LONDON, Oct. 3. (Received Oct. 4, at 11.35 p.m.) The Times correspondent on the Italian frontier says that well-in-formed circles in Rome state that the Minister of the Interior, Serior Suner, exhaustively discussed the possibility of allowing Italian-Ger-man troops free passage across Spain in order to attack Gibraltar. It is expected that Spain's role in the conflict will be announced at the week-end. From Dr Gayda's comment it is assumed that Spain will at present remain non-belligerent, though obviously she has agreed to closer economic co-operation with the Axis.
