WAR WEDDINGS
War-time weddings and engagements are bringing some interesting new problems to the jewellers in England. The engagement ring problem is one of economy plus diamond shortage. Every girl wants an engagement ring, but nowadays there is need to save te help the war effort, also the loss of diamond supplies, due to the dislocation of the Dutch diamond industry, has not yet been made up by the diamond cutting industry over here. The answer to this problem is usually a ring so designed that it may be added to when times are better. A wedding present has a special significance that cannot wholly be maae up bv a later gift. But in view of the pressing need for national economy jewellers are helping in many ways. Cutlery, for instance, is being made up in sets of three, with room in the canteen for more later on. A rjractical war-time present Is a small case containing silver thermos flask and unspillable mugs for use in the air-raid shelter. This will find further usefulness as a picnic set in normal times.
