Mrs Webster presided over the monthly meeting of the Windsor Park Institute. The motto was "Life is short, but there is time for courtesy," and the roll call, "A cure for tired feet." Mrs Webster read an interesting iton from "Pioneer Tales" of early Southland. Two parcels were sent' to the soldiers overseas. The competitions resulted:—Brown nui and raisin loaf—Mrs Buzan 1 Mrs Taylor 2; bloom—Mesdames Craig 1, Webster and Buzan (equal) 2. Garmt.it for refugee parcel—Mesdames Webster 1 Fisher and Craig (equal) 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Forrest. Buzan and Marshall.

* * * At the October meeting of. the Naseby Institute Mrs. Fowler (president) was in the chair. The motto was "Politeness is like an air-cush-ion—there's nothing in it. but it eases the iolts considerably," and the roll call was. "A ■ humorous story or verse." A reading from "Pioneer Tales" was given bv Mrs Tallentine. The competitions resulted:—Jar of spring flowers—Mrs Fowler 1 Mrs Smith 2; toffee—Mrs Stuart 1. The hostesses were Mrs Brown and Mrs Tallentine. ,

The Sawyers' Bay Institute met on Thursday last, Mrs Begbie presiding The motto was, "A friend may be reckoned the masterpiece of nature,' and the roll call, "A verse or a few lines on friendship." Members exchanged seeds, plants, bulbs and cuttings for a " friendship " garden. Four members tied for first place in a competition "bloom." Mrs Nelson gave an interesting demonstration on the mak ing of soft toys and prepared an in teresting paper on "Friendship." Par eels were handed in for the Lady Galway Guild. It was announced that the monetary collection for a soldier's parcel had been over-subscribed.
