DUCKS AND POLITICS
TO THE EDITOH
Sir, —In to-day's issue of the Daily Times there are quite a few covert attacks on the Labour Government, from your well-balanced sentences in the editorial columns down to the usual letters. The strangest, however, is the letter wherein the writer traces the killing of the duck on the Leith to the pernicious influence of the said Government. There has been much indignation about the matter, so it is unnecessary for me to add to the sum of it. Boys and youths are often impulsive and occasionally have no respect for either little ducks or Governments. Probably there was a challenge issued; and perhaps some contrition after the deed was done. They must learn, however, to wait and slaughter the ducks in due season after being properly licensed to do so. We are strange mortals; and perhaps strangest in our moods of righteous indignation. There will be thousands of ducks killed later on and many wounded and left to die—beaks shot off, and legs broken. But this does not awaken our indignation as throwing stones dees. Well, two blacks do not make a white and no doubt it was thoughtless of them to bring shame on the Labour Government at such a time when it is fully taken up preparing to defend so many sheep, to say nothing of ducks.—l am, etc., Lame Duck. Cromwell, Oct. 2.
