GIFT TO ARMY
FOUR MOTOR CARS WHEATGROWERS AND MILLERS (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 3. Appreciation of the patriotic action of New Zealand wheatgrowers and the New Zealand Flour Millers’ Society in connection with a gift of four motor cars to the Army Department was expressed by the Minister of Supply (Mr D. G. Sullivan) to-night. The Minister explained that upon the outbreak of war the Wheat Committee's four mO(tor cars were withdrawn from service, and the officers travelling were instructed to use the ordinary transport facilities to conserve petrol and assist in the national war effort. At a recent meeting of the committee it was considered that a further contribution to the war effort could be made by handing these vehicles over for the use of the fighting services. As both the wheatgrowers and flourmillers had a joint interest in these four cars, which were purchased with funds belonging to the industries. it was decided to consult the chairmen of the governing bodies before making the transfer. Mr Sullivan said that Mr Nicoll, chairman of United Wheatgrowers. and Mr R. J. Lyon, chairman of the New Zealand Flourmillers’ Society, both stated that not only would their members raise no objection to the suggestion. but would gladly welcome this opportunity to assist the national war effort and to express in a tangible way their appreciation of the work of the fighting services. The opinion was also expressed that other organisations might follow the lead given by furnishing motor vehicles which could be released from service without undue inconvenience.
