DESTROYERS RENAMED
THE TRANSFERRED SHIPS (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, Oct. 2. (Received Oct, 3, at 7.30 p.m.) The names of towns and villages common to the United Kingdom and the United States of America have been selected for 44 of the destroyers transferred from the United States Navy. Two ships are to bear the names of towns in Newfoundland as well as in the United States and the United Kingdom—St. Albans and St. Marys. , Six will bear the names of towns in the West Indies, as well as in the United Kingdom and the United States. These will be named Bath, Brighton, Charleston, Georgetown, Hamilton, and Roxborough. Twenty-eight of the ships will be named after towns and villages common to the United Kingdom and the United States. The names will be Belmont. Beverley, Bradford. Broadwater, Broadway, Burnham, Burwell, Buxton, Lancaster, Leamington. Leeds, Lewes, Lincoln, Ludlow, Mansfield, Montgomery, Newark, Newmarket, Newport, Ramsey, Reading. Richmond, Ripley, Rockingham. Salisbury, Sherwood, Stanley, Wells. -Eight, other ships already named were Churchill (leader), Caldwell. Cameron, Castleton, Chelsea, Chester- , field, Clare and Campbelltown. The remaining six destroyers i transferred from the United States Navy are being manned by the Royal * Canadian Navy. These ships will ■ bear the names of towns and villages common to Canada and the United States. They will be named : Annapolis, Columbia, Niagara, St. Clair, St. Croix and St. Francis.
