ESCAPED PRISONERS INTENSIVE POLICE SEARCH WARDEN’S CONDITION SERIOUS (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND. Oct, 2. No one has reported having seen any of the four criminals who escaped from the Auckland Prison on Tuesday night after gravely injuring one warder and injuring two others but the circumstances surrounding the attempted theft of a motor car from the grounds of a house in Parnell and the-theft of a tomahawk and a raincoat and cardigan from another house in the same street suggest that the four fugitives have tried to find some form of transport and civilian clothes to wear. Police motor and foot patrols and search parties combed all oarts ol the city to-day. The Auckland Hospital authorities reported late to-night that Joseph Graydon Crawford, aged 62. the warder who suffered severe head injuries and lacerations while struggling with his assailants, was seriously ill. The two other warders, Joseph Wenzl Scholium, aged 32, and Arthur Burgess, aged 43. who had slight concussion and scalp wounds, were said to be fairly satisfactory.
QUESTION IN PARLIAMENT STATEMENT BY DR McMILLAN \ 'From QUb Parliamentary Reporter' WELLINGTON, Oct. 2. The statement that the police had the matter in hand was made by the Minister in Charge of the Prisons Department, Dr D. G McMillan, to-day in connection with the gaol-break at Auckland. Dr McMillan, when asked to comment upon the escape of the four missing men, - aid that unti 1 a full inquiry into the circumstances had been held it was not proposed to make a statement on the case.
