HOURS OF SMALL SHOPS

CONFECTIONERY AND DRINKS PETITION TO PARLIAMENT (From Oub Parliamentary Kerokteri WELLINGTON. Oct. Z. A request that shops in which confectionery. soft drinks and similar small goods are sold should be permitted to^keep open for trading as at present was contained in a petition from C. C. King, of Auckland, and 107 other owners or occupiers of such shops which was presented in the House of Representatives to-day by Mr F. W. Schramm (Govt.. Auckland East). The petition was referred to the Labour Bills Committee. The petitioners staled that they were very deeply concerned at the proposed restriction of hours under the Shops and Offices Act. In numerous cases the bulk of the business in their shops, especially those catering for theatre patrons, was done between the hours of 6 p.m. and 11 p.m., and loss of that trade would force a large number out of business It was therefore asked that in the interests both of the community and the retail confectioners no restriction of hours should be imposed
