SOUTHLAND LIME WORKS
OPERATION ON SATURDAY AFTERNOONS REQUEST TO THE MINISTER iSpecial ro Daily Times) INVERCARGILL. Oct. 2. A request by the Southland Council of Primary Production for authority for the Southland lime works to operate on Saturday afternoons without the payment of overtime rates to the employees is being investigated by the Minister of Labour, Mr P. C. Webb Advice to this effect has been received by the secretary of the council, Mr A. L. Adamson. When the council met representatives of the lime companies a fortnight ago the companies accepted orders for 3700 tons of lime urgently required for cultivation purposes before the sowing of crops this season. Since that date Mr Adamson has received orders for an additional 2000 tons of lime, wanted for similar purposes: but the companies state that they cannot guarantee the delivery of the, extra 2000 tons sought by the council, and that the selling rates will not permit the payment of overtime rates to the employees. Mr Adamson has acknowledged the advice from the Minister, and urged an early decision because, of the urgency of the matter.
