BURNSIDE STOCK SALE

CATTLE SLIGHTLY FIRMER SHEEP AGAIN DEARER There was a firming in the market for cattle at the Burnside stock sale yesterday, and sheep also experienced an advance in value. Fat cattle had a yarding of 294 head. The quality was again good, with a fair showing of heavy bullocks. Heifers and cows were not oversupplied. The market opened at last week’s rates, but over the latter part of the sale there was a slight firming especially for cows and heifers. Extra prime heavy bullocks made to £25 17s 6d; prime, £2l 2s 6d to £23 12s 6d; medium, £l7 17s 6tl to £l9 7s 6d; light, £l3 2s 6d to £l6 7s 6d; extra prime cows and heifers, to £lB 7s 6d; prime, £l3 17s

RANGE OF PRICES

The following quotations per 1001 b for beef and per lb for mutton and pigs are supplied, with a comparison with last week’s prices, by our special representative at yesterday’s Burnside Stock Sale:—

6d to £ls 17s 6d; medium. £ll 7s 6d to £l2 17s 6d; light, £9 12s 6d to £U 7s 6d; unfinished, to £7 17s 6d. In the fat sheep section 1598 were yarded Several consignments of prime heavy ewes and wethers were penned, with a fairy number of light ewes and hoggets. The sale opened at last week’s rates, but there was soon an advance in prices of Is 6d to 2s for all grades. The market was a keen one throughout. Extra prime heavy wethers brought 50s to 545; prime, 45s to 48s 6d; medium, 40s to 42s 6d; light, 35s to 375; extra prime"heavy ewes, to 48s 6d; prime, 42s to 445; medium, 37s to 40s 6d; light, 32s to 35s 6d; unfinished, to 28s, Included in the store cattle entry was a line of 110 steers and heifers from Cattle Flat Station. These were keenly competed for, the steers making to £ll 10s (average price £9 15s), and the heifers made to £8 12s 6d. Other cattle sold well, and the sale generally was 5s to 10s better, with a free demand. Dairy cows had a small yarding, with prices a shade easier. A large entry of fat pigs was forward. Baconers were again easier to the extent of 3s, with heavy-weights hard to sell. Porkers made late rates. Best baconers sold to £4 17s and porkers to £3 13s. A large entry of store pigs was easier by 3s to 4s.

ADDINGTON MARKET SLIGHT RISE IN VALUES (Per United Press Association; CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 2. Entries generally were smaller at today’s Addington market, and values in most sections were from par to slightly dearer. A small penning of spring lambs sold at about Is a lb. Store sheep recovered the easing of last week. Ewe hoggets made to 32s for best and to 26s for medium. Ewes and lambs, all counted, sold at 17s for the best and to 14s for medium. . Fat Sheep.—A small entry ot 3200 and an improvement in prices of 2s a head for best and also for prime shorn sheep, the sale concluding very firmly. Shorn sheep sold relatively better than sheep in the wool. Best wethers made to 545. good heavy 47s to 50s, prime medium 43s to 465, and light down to 335. Show ewes sold at 53s 7d, prime heavy at 42s to 465. and others down to 255. Fat Cattle.--A small entry ot 350 head, including lines from the West Coast and Otago. There was a strong showing of good quality. Good steers scarcely held the rales ot the preceding sale, but many made from 53s to 565, and tops to 57s per 1001 b. Best steers sold at from £2O to £25 17s 6d. good £l7 to £l9 10s, and light down to £ll. There was an improved demand of 10s a head for prime cows, and the best of these sold at from £l4 to £lB 10s for a few special only. Very ordinary cows failed to make double figures

Fat P(gs.—The entry was the largest of the season, and both corkers and baconers slipped, plain heavy baconers by up to 10s a head. Porkers prices averaged from 7d to 83d per lb. and baconers from 63d to 73d.
