TAHAKOPA Lawn Tennis On Saturday the opening for the season took place on the Tahakopa lawn tennis courts, and a large number of players took part in a ’’ Yankee ” tournament. The handicapping was carried out by Messrs J. Blair and J. Henry, and some even games resulted. The tournament was won by Mrs A. Griffin and J. Blair, who defeated Mrs C, Griffin and E. Sefton 31 —28. School Committee Meeting The monthly meeting of the Tahakopa School Committee was held on Tuesday night. The head teacher’s report stated that the average roll for tire month of September was 74. Attendance had been adversely affected by colds. During the month Miss M. J. Cooper, who has been supernumerary on the staff for the year, had been appointed to another school. It was doubtful whether a third teacher would be appointed next year. Labour Day Sports Abandoned The decision of the annual meeting to hold sports at Tahakopa on Labour Day was revoked at a special meeting of the Tahakopa Sports Society. Mr J. Blair, who presided over a fair attendance, stated that a difficulty had arisen concerning the supply of logs for the woodcraft events. This, in conjunction with the fact that no special train would be run from Dunedin made the success of the fixture doubtful. After full discussion, it was decided that the sports be abandoned for this year. Farewell to Teacher

Miss M. J. Cooper, who has been a member of the Tahakopa School staff, during the present year, was the recipient of two gifts from the pupils of the school before her departure. Miss Jean Dunlop, a pupil of Standard 11, presented Miss Cooper with a small gift on behalf of the pupils of Standards I and 11, and Miss May Anglem presented a gift from the remaining pupils of the school. Miss Cooper suitably replied.

BALCLUTHA Visit of Air Force Queen The Air Force Queen (Miss Mary Pratt) and several of her retinue of countesses continued the tour of South Otago yesterday and at 10 a.m. visited the Balclutha Primary School, which was en fete for the occasion, and the children carried flags and sang several songs. A speech of welcome was delivered by Master Ronald Grant after introductory remarks by the headmaster (Mr A. Hall). Before leaving the queen declared a half-holiday for the school, a declaration that was wildly applauded. Afterwards a similar ceremony was conducted at the South Otago High School, which was also given a half-holiday. The queen party then left for Clinton, Clydevale. and Greenfield. Bowling

The Balclutha Ladies’ Bowling Club opened the season on Tuesday under favourable weather conditions, and there was an assemblage of 45 women players, including 36 visitors who came from Gore, Kaitangata, Milton, and Owaka. Mr M. Campbell (president of the Mens Club) declared the green open, and Mrs Slrett (women’s president) welcomed the visitors. Mrs Ramsay (Kaitangata) won the prize for the opening competition. Mr F D. Grant. Public Works engineer, stationed at Balclutha, and in charge of the South Otago-Tuapeka area, has received nbtice of his transfer on loan to the Linen Flax Committee, Department of Industries and Commerce, as works superintendent, in connection with the 10 linen flax processing plants to be erected in the South Island, with headquarters at Christchurch. He will leave to take up his new duties on Sunday next. During the four years he has been stationed here, Mr Grant has carried out numerous works throughout the district, including the reconstruction of 50 miles of the Main South road between Milton and Arthurton and the tar-sealing of 35 miles; also the reconstruction of 15 miles of the main Central Otago highway. Mrs Grant and family will not leave Balclutha until some time later. Local Rainfall

In September the rainfall in Balclutha measured 1.17 in, compared with 206 m for September of last year. Rain fell on 13 days, the heaviest fall (26 points) occurring on the 27th. Opening of Fishing Season

Molyneux River fishermen had good luck yesterday (opening day) in the vicinity of the freezer. Mrs W. Arnold secured a good basketful, including two fivepounders. In the same locality Mr L. Fallowfield got 12. the heaviest fish being 6Jlb; Tom King, 13 fish; Messrs P. Minola. Cl ode. and T. Darrey 33 fish in all. Those visiting the streams also did well, and report fish rising freely to the fly. despite the cold day. Mr D. T. Millar and party got 15 nice fish in the Owaka; Mr T. Milne 10 good fish in the Waiwera. averaging 2Jlb; and Mr Charles Eason eight in the Catlins. averaging 21b. Milan McFarlane secured a good bag in the Upper Catlins, including one fish over 51b taken on the dry fly. Mr F. J, Anderson. of Balclutha. got one of the best baskets of the day—ll nice fish taken from the Catlins.
