LAWRENCE Patriotic Committee The monthly meeting of the Tuapeka County Patriotic Committee was held at Rae’s Junction on Monday. The Tapanui, Heriot, Kelso, Crookston. Lawrence. Roxburgh, and Beaumont Farewell Committees forwarded balance sheets of functions held by them and were granted the statutory authority to hold the balances for a further period. The treasurer (Mr J. H. Waigth) reported that the collections to date, excluding the Queen Carnival receipts, were £937 Ms 10d, made up as follows: Lawrence, £409 7s Id; Roxburgh, £257 4s 3d; Miller’s Flat. £lO4 11s; Tuapeka Mouth, £6B 14s; Waitahuna, £56 2s 9d: Tapanui, £2l 16s; and Beaumont, £l9 16s 9d. The Otago Provincial Patriotic Council wrote notifying that all parcels from branches of the Lady Galway Patriotic Guild would be carried rail-free.—Re-ceived. , , .. Considerable correspondence from the Otago Provincial Patriotic Council and the Air Force Queen Committee in connection with the Queen Carnival was received The secretary reported having forwarded all the information to the various committees throughout the county, and each were organising in their own districts. , Accounts totalling £1 10s 5d were passed for payment. Red Cross Society
The fortnightly meeting of the Lawrence branch of the Red Cross Society was held on Tuesday afternoon in the Borough Council Chambers, Mrs R. * • Batchelor presiding. A good number of mittens, scarves, and pullovers were handed in. while a further quantity of wool was distributed for knitting. To • assist the Queen Carnival, it was resolved to hold a bring-and-buy sale in the Council Chambers on Friday, Oclobei 11 and to canvass the district for donations of produce, cakes, etc. 11 was decided to hold a copper trail on the sarne afternoon, with the assistance of the Gin Guides and Boy Scouts. The coppei trail is to be laid from the Post Office to th„ railway station, via Ross place, MIDDLEMARCH Rainfall September was another dry month with a rainfall considerably below the average. Sin a ce n September 27. however, there has been frequent showers, and since then pastures have made a considerable advance and the district is looking quite well Lambing is proceeding apace, and with continued good weather the indications arc there will be a record, especially on the plain. The rainfall for the month was 87 points, against 2.56 inches for September last vear. For the two months. August and September, only 1.38 inches were recorded, against 4.94 inches for the came months last. year. et. loi the nine months ended September 30, 1940, there were 16.58 inches recorded, against 13.47 inches last year. Golf Dance
The Rolf dance organised by members of the Golf Club in aid of the Air Force Queen was held in ihe A. and P. Ilali on Friday evening. There was a large attendance present and the funds will benefit to the extent of £22. During the evening the president, Mr G. S. Gillespie, presented the following prizes which were competed for during the last golf season:— Men's championship, Mr A. McGregor. Ladies’ championship, Miss Arnott. Ladies iunlor handicap, Mrs J. McMaster. On Friday evening the Middlemarch branch of the Women’s Institute’s effort to help the Air Force Queen to top the poll will be held in the A. and P. Hall.
