JACK-IN-THE-BOX PILOTS

HURLED OUT BY A SPRING (From Our Own Correspondent) LONDON, Sept. 9. A number of the German fighter aircraft are believed to be now fitted with a spring under the'pilot’s seat to assist parachute escapes. The spring is apparently released by a button or lever at the side of the'pilot’s compartment, and is so strong that*it hurls the pilot straight out’ of the cockpit like a jack-in-the-box, throwing him clear of the aircraft. A Hurricane pilot who attacked ? Messerschmitt 109 a day dr so ago saw his bullets entering the fuselage, and was surprised to see the pilot spring into the air like, a man standing at attention and then make a para chute landing.

In view of the consistency with which our Hurricanes and Spitfire* are shooting down the Messerschmitts this new device will no doubt b* warmly welcomed by the Germai pilots. In the past, encumbered b) their heavy parachutes.: many of then have experienced great difficulty-ii climbing out of the cockpit befor their aircraft has lost too much heigh to make a parachute.,landing possible
