Menlove, of Queenstown. are visiting Dunedin. »V* V 'V Miss Diana Dickerson, who has been the guest of her aunt, Mrs Stuart Glendining, has returned to Wellington. * * * A pleasant function was held in the Savoy on Monday, when th 3 president (Miss H. Sparrow) of the St. Clair Croquet Club entertained at afternoon tea members who have met weekly during the winter months to make garments for the refugee children. On behalf of those present, Mrs Charles Baker thanked Miss Sparrow for an enjoyable afternoon. * * ■■ * The committee of the Onslow Ladies’ Golf Club will be in charge of the dugout at the Octagon on Wednesday afternoon, October 9, from 12.30, and will be pleased to receive donations of goods of produce, fruit, flowers, cakes, etc., which can be left at the residence of the club captain (Mrs A. C. Swanson), or of the secretary (Mrs Frank Drake, of Musselburgh Rise).

Wetherstone daffodils are kindly promised for to-morrow, Daffodil Day, and it is also expected that some fine blooms will be sent from the garden of Sir Heaton Rhodes, The wonderful work of the Karitane-Harris Hospital and the Plunket nurses is known to all, but the tremendous amount of voluntary work is perhaps not so well known. It is hoped that on the society’s one street day of the year everybody who can will give as generously as in the past and so help to raise at least £SOO. The stalls will be well stocked with home-made delicacies provided by friends of the society, and donations will be gladly received by Mrs Taverner. of the South Dunedin stall.

The annual dance of the King’s High School was held in the School Assembly Hall on Saturday last, the visitors being received by the rector (Mr D. S. Chisholm) and Mrs Chisholm. Australian Society Social Large bowls of spring flowers decorated the lounge of the Strand Salon on Saturday evening when a large number of Australians and their friends gathered for their' popular monthly social evening. An enjoyable time was spent in dancing, Mr J. Cunningham acting as M.C., Mrs E. Clayton supplying the music and Miss M. Kennedy being the accompanist. Miss Pat Justine entertained with humorous elocutionary items and Mr W. Stewart added to the pleasure of the company with several vocal numbers. The Monte Carlo waltz competition was won by Mr and Mrs R. Sewell. During supper Mr A. A. Paape (president) extended a welcome to several visitors. A short- community sing conducted by Mr W. Ferguss. ¥ * v Address on Housing Schemes The Civic Circle of the Otago Women’s Club held its annual meeting on Wednesday last. Mrs Porteous spoke on the satisfactory state disclosed by the report and balance sheet. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—Chairwoman, Mrs Taverner; vice-chair-woman, Mrs C. M. Begg; hon. secretary and treasurer, Miss A. M. Andrew; committee—Mesdames Porteous, Bain and McGregor, and Miss Reith. These with Mesdames Hill. Stewart and Dennis, and Miss Lane constitute the officials for the year. Mrs Taverner spoke about the coming functions at the club in aid of the city Queen Carnival, and especially about the big flower show on October 18, when the Civic Circle will be in charge of the tea rooms. The speaker made an earnest appeal for goods to supply the tea rooms. An interesting address was given on “Housing Schemes" by Miss Tyndall, who dealt first with the municipal housing scheme, pointing out that the price of the house must not be above a certain figure, that the applicant’s salary must be within a limit, that the applicant could choose his section and have his own plans drawn, though these must be approved by the authorities: and that New Zealand materials must be used wherever possible. In time the applicant could pay off the cost and thus become the owner. In the Government scheme. Miss Tyndall said, the tenant could never become the owner. She then gave a description of the Government houses, where they were being built and the number in each group. The houses were mostly single houses, but some were two-unit and some were even four-unit houses. Some flats were also .being tried out in the cities. All houses were fitted with the latest conveniences, and a variety of designs were used to avoid a dull sameness. Miss Tyndall showed some interesting plans. Several questions were answered by the speaker, who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks-

Arrangements are in the hands of the women's committee supporting the queen, and Mrs H. J. Fotheringham is acting as convener.

A visitor at the Y.W.C.A. to-day will be Mrs G. McNeur, late of Canton, who will officially open the World Fellowship Bazaar at 3 p.m. Having spent 37 years in China Mrs McNeur understands the life of the Chinese people and her talk should prove verv interesting. if * *

The personnel of the R.N.Z.A.F., Taieri, is responsible for the arrangements in connection with the Air Force Queen Carnival Ball, which will be held to-morrow evening in the Town Hall. The decorations will be the work of the Gardening Circle of the Otago Women’s Club, and music will be supplied by Jim Murray's Swing Stars. Diversions will include' ballets and exhibition dancing.
