LATE NEWS

“HITLER'S OLD GAME” NO EFFECT ON AMERICA (By Wireless) LONDON, Oct. 1. (Received Oct, 2, at 1.30 a.m.) Commenting on the alliance between the Axis Powers and Japan, the New York Times says that Hitler is back at his old game of threats, but these will have no effect an America. The real reason for the alliance is to be found in the fact that all the strength he can muster is not sufficient to defeat Britain. It is significant, too, that children are being sent out of Berlin and that people in the Rhineland and other industrial areas are flocking into Holland, Belgium and France in search of safety. Hitler has urgent reasons for wishing to avoid a long war, but he is facing the uncomfortable fact that the military might of the Reich is not adequate to ensure a quick decision. THE AMERICAN NAVY EXERCISES IN CANAL ZONE PANAMA, Sept. 30. (Received Oct. 1, at 2 a.m.) In war exercises the United States Navy, in collaboration with the Air Wing, successfully defended the Canal Zone against theoretical European bombers. The theory of the exercises is, that the United States Fleet has defeated the Asiatic Fleet, thence hastens to the canal for an attack by European units which established a base on the South American coast and in the Caribbean. GERMAN AIR LOSSES (By Wireless) LONDON, Oct. 1. (Received Oct. 2, at IiSO a.m.) With the destruction of 49 planes in yesterday’s raids the German losses for September reached a total of 1095 machines and 2500 skilled airmen. In the same period the British losses were 319 planes and 156 airmen. DEMANDS ON SYRIA ITALIAN COMMISSION (By Wireless) LONDON, Oct. 1. (Received Oct. 2, at 1.30 a.m.) It is persistently reported that the Italian Armistice Commission is making fresh and far-reaching demands on Syria, aimed at giving Italy and Germany a stronger grip on the country. Included in the demands are the right for former German and Italian propaganda agents to return to Syria, the right of Germans and Italians to wear party badges, and to continue the organisation of youth movements in the country, and the issue of an Italian newspaper in Beirut, subject only to Italian censorship. CHINA’S ATTITUDE TO PACT WILL NEVER RECOGNISE IT CHUNGKING, Oct. 1. (Received Oct. 2, at 2 a.m.) Under no circumstances will China recognise Japanese leadership in the establishment of a so-called “Greater Asia,” nor will she ever recognise the validity of ‘the new order," declared an official statement issued here in connection with the tripartite pact. The statement adds: “ The pact clearly seeks to invalidate the legitimate rights of third Powers, both in Europe and Asia—a policy against which China has always striven. The pact can never affect China’s position and her legitimate rights, nor can it ever tend to affect the policy of China’s national Government.”
