MR SEMPLE’S PURSE

A RUMOUR REPUDIATED (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Oct. 1. In characteristic language, the Minister of Public Works (Mr R. Semple) to-day emphatically repudiated a persistent rumour that he was acquiring some overseas assets by building a £50,000 block of flats in Sydney. “ Beyond my homo in Wellington, ’ Mr Semple said, “I-haven't a cent invested anywhere in the world. I do not own sufficient wood in Australia to build a mousetrap, let alone a block of flats, and if you can find a philanthropist who will pay off the mortgage on my house, lead me to him."

Direct questions regarding overseas investments had been addressed to him so often, the Minister said, that he thought it would be advisable to make a public declaration as to the state of his purse.
