RAIN IN NEW SOUTH WALES WHOLE STATE BENEFITS .SYDNEY, Oct. 1. (Received Oct. 2, at 1 a.m.) Nearly the whole of New South Wales has greatly benefited by substantial rain, which began last Saturday and is still falling at intervals. In the coastal areas the rain has freshened up the crops and given dairy farmers, particularly on the south coast, new heart. Sydney’s catchment area is receiving a drenching, but Water Board officials declare that the rain so far has added only about a week’s supply to the depleted dams. The weather bureau announced that the rain disturbance is veering away from the Australian coast towards the north of New Zealand. PETROL RATIONING FEWER CARS ON ROADS SYDNEY, Oct. 1. (Received Oct. 2, at 1 a.m.) Petrol rationing operated from today and there were considerably fewer cars on the roads. Private car-owners, preferring to conserve their supplies for week-end tours, reverted to trains, trams and ferryboats to take them to business.
