RURAL HOUSING

POWERS OF COUNTY COUNCILS

AUTHORITY UNDER ACT

(From Our Parliamentary Keportehi

WELLINGTON, Oct. 1

“ County councils are empowered under the Counties Act, 1920, by special order and without taking a poll of the ratepayers to raise a loan tor purchasing land and erecting on it dwellings for workers of any kind.” said the Minister of Housing, Mr H. T. Armstrong, when replying in the House of Representatives to-day to a question asked by Mr W, J. Poison (Opposition. Stratford). “The State Advances Corporation of New Zealand has considered and will consider applications for finance for the purpose mentioned.” the Minister added. Mr Poison had asked whether the counties possessed the power mentioned by the Minister; and, if not, whether he would provide them with it. He said that in some cases county officials had expressed the opinion that the law enabled counties to build houses only for their own workmen.
