POSITION IN SWITZERLAND GETTING WORSE EVERY DAY LONDON, Sept. 30. The Times says the Vichy Government has banned the export of foodstuffs to Switzerland. The dearth of food is being accentuated every day Many farmers are not bothering to gather their crops because there is no transport. The peasants are reluctant to make autumn sowings. Housewives wait in long queues for meagre, amounts of f00d... and many shops are almost empty The extreme scarcity includes milk, better.- cheese, sugar, potatoes, soap and textiles. A message from New York states that the Stanford University Food Research Institute declared that the Nazis can prevent a critical food shortage among the conquered countries ,by releasing their wheat reserve. It adds that if Britain maintains' her domestic eqpnomy and shipping she will suffer only a qualitative reduction in diet. Germanised Poland. Netherlands. Belgium. Denmark and Norway are threatened with serious shortages Belgium is in the most serious alight of all France’s supplies are adequate. but the distribution problem is serious.
