POWER TO DESTROY TREES COMPENSATION FOR OWNERS (From Qub Parliamentary Reporter* WELLINGTON, Oct. 1. Provision for the making of regulations requiring the partial or complete destruction of orchards affected by citrus canker and the payment of compensation to the owners, is contained in the Orchard and Garden Diseases Amendment Bill, which was introduced in the House of Representatives to-day The Bill was read a first time. Although the Bill has been introduced particularly to deal with citrus canker, it may be applied tc any disease affecting orchards and gardens, and detailed powers are provided for the making of regulations to control any outbreak. Compensation for the destruction or special treatment of any specified plant is to be fixed by regulation. There is also authority for the appointment of advisory- committees and for the payment of fees and allowr ances to members. Regulations may also be made containing safeguards against the introduction of new diseases.in plants.
