Haughty Winner While riding a horse at Dar.'ier practice at Riccarton. C. McCarthy was kicked below one knee, and was unable to get about much for a few days, .'(• he decided not to take Haughty Winner to the Kurow meeting. A Long Shot
A Sydney bookmakei is said to nave laid £IO,OOO to a small sum against D Munro riding the winners of ‘his year’s Epsom, Metropolitan, Caulfield Cup, mid Melbourne Cup. F. Shean two years ago won the Epsom on King’s Head. Caulfield Cup on Buzalong, and Melbourne Cup on Catalogue, but strangely enough has not done anything snecial sinceAlr Force Handicap Some smart sprinters are engaged in the Air Force Handicap, which is framed at a light scale of weights. Over the six furlongs Sparkle meets Night Pal on 121 b better terms than in the Churchill Handicap.
Epsom Handicap It would seem as if the Epsom Handicap is going to be a battle of champions (says a Sydney correspondent). Beaulivre, High Caste. Heading, and Mildura stand out in class, and unless the handicapper has made any serious error with regard to a horse lower down in the weights—and this is not apparent to date —it appears likely that one of this quartet will win. ■,
Capricious Capricious has not won a race since scoring in the Waihola Handicap run at the Dunedin Cup meeting of 1939. She won with 7.131 from Master Dingle 7.7 and Settlement 8.10, and the unplaced lot included Stralghtdell 8.13. Last season Capricious ran 17 times without winning.
Compensation When Prince Ruenalf’s saddle slipped when racing close to the post at the finish of the Hydro Hack Handicap, he held a good chance of winning, or at least getting amongst the money. In the race he was handicapped to meet Taxpayer on even terms. In the Taioma Handicap some compensation is received by getting 21b from Taxpayer. Silver Streak
Silver Streak had the Munro Handicap won over a furlong from home, and was marked off six lengths in front of Toro Koura at the finish. Silver Streak meets Toro Koura on 101 b and Night Pal on 21b (including allowance) worse terms in the Air Force Handicap.
Tricking the Touts “An astute old English squire, who bred his own horses with a view to the classics and other great races, was at a loss to know why, when his horses did their final trials in private, everyone in the village knew everything about them and forestalled him in the market. One year he hit upon the idea of inviting the entire village to a banquet at the manor. Wine flowed freely, and in the early hours of the morning the old squire asked his guests to excuse him for a while. ’ I am going to lock you all in,’ he said, ’ so that I can have my trial for the Cesarewitch on my own.’ ’’
Trainer’s Tip When Gladyhev’s trainer and rider were Interrogated concerning that horse’s run - ning at Randwlck, the inquiry did not conclude until 6 o’clock, an hour after the last race was run. J. T. Jamieson was reported to have said there was too much fuss about nothing, and that Gladynev was not worthy of the spotlight played on him because he had " about 71b ” th.e best of the weights al Caulfield. “I don’t. think he could win the Eight Hours’ Day procession,” heatedly declared the trainer. Yet two days latet somebody invested a lot of money on Gladynev for the Caulfield Cup.
Place Betting There has been . controversy in Brisbane following the decision of the Queensland Turf Club committee to ■withdraw from bookmakers the privilege of betting for a place on courses under the jurisdiction of the club. This action was taken a few years ago by the Australian Jockey Club, and similar differences of opinion were expressed at that time While one section declares that the diversion of place betting to the totalisator will materially assist clubs to maintain prize money at a high level, the Queensland Breeders, Owners and Trainers’ Association and the bookmakers moved to secure reconsideration of the rule Colossus Filly
The Trentham owner-trainers Messrs B. V and V. B. Carruthers have secured a lease of the two-year-old half-sister by Colossus to Barabbas. The dam of this filly, who is chestnut in colour, is the Camp Fire—Snowland mare Alpine Camp a half-sister to the Now Zealand Cup and Great Autumn winner Arctic King Barabbas, her only previous foal, was a three-quarter blood relative to Arctic King, and he gave much promise carlv in his career, but never properly recovered from a bad fall he had at Olaki and was sold cheaply some time ago The inbreeding that existed in Arctic King and Barabbas is avoided in the Colossus fill v
Body-building Ashlev Reed, who recently retired from race riding after a long and successful career, has, with Mrs Reed, gone into the Centennial Hotel. Kensington, Melbourne. Commenting upon the risks run by jockeys in races, “ Doncaster,” of the Argus mentioned to Ashley a certain meeting when Mrs Reed was very anxious about his welfare on account of the greasy state of the going. His only comment was: “She never stopped worrying while I was riding." “ Yes,” chimed in Mrs Reed, ” and it cost me a fortune in body-building foods for our boy when he was a youngster I wanted him to be too big to ride, and I succeeded, too Just look at him.” We looked, says ” Doncaster,” and discovered that the son and heir. Jack Reed, has developed into almost a six-footer. His only hope for a mount would be the top-weight in a Grand National.
The Raker The Raker's win In the Kurow Cup marks a return to winning form, and hence lie is not harshly treated m the Churchill Handicap. He meets Straightdell on 41b worse terms over an extra halt furlong, and as he was outstaying the Straightcourse gelding should beat nirn again at Wingatui The Raker meets Swordstick on 81b, Petersham on.9b, Sir Hugh on 61b, and Night Pal on 10lb worse terms than when handicapped lor the Kurow Cup. Doria N Dona won at the Grand National meeting and in the Air Force Handicap meets Spanish Lad (fourth) on 91b, Strip 91b, and Night Pal on 131 b worse terms. Dona meets Hearth on 101 b better terms than when they met at Riccarton. In the Dunedin Champagne Stakes Doria was second to Shikari, and Gold Flight fourth In the Air Force Handicap Doria meets Gold Flight on 41b worse terms and should again finish in front of the southern filly TROTTING NOTES By Sentinel FIXTURES October s.—Methven T.C October s.—Thames T.C. A Long Card The eight races on the Methven Trotting Club’s card may be extended to 10 or 11 if divisions become necessary. First Success
J. McLennan, Jun„ who drove Passing By in her success at the Kurow meeting on Saturday, is a son of Jack McLennan, veteran Otago and Southland trainer, of Wyndham. The occasion marked young McLennan’s first winning effort. Gold Bar
The Grattan Loyal colt Gold Bar created a good impression by his form at Wellington. and it is being predicted that lie will develop into a high-class performer Last season Gold Bar won four races and gained a place in six others. Embark Destroyed Embark, a Southland-owned pacer who raced regularly! without much success during the last three or four seasons, was destroyed recently He was a chestnut gelding by Happy Voyage from a John Dillon mare, and raced in the colours of Mr T A. Gerrard. His best records were 2min 8 4-ssec for a mile and 4min 22 l-ssec for two miles, both registered at Forbury Park track a couple of seasons ago Last season he was raced five times for one second and £25 in stake money.
All Gallant According to an exchange few horses at the Park showed more speed than All Gallant, but at the moment he is not too good a stayer However, he is improving all the time, and he should be a bright prospect for an early maiden event. He is a four-year-old by the American horse Gallant Knight from Nyallo. who produced among others Taxpayer (3min 18 4-ssec), Refund, and Lady Chenault. Both Ardglass and All Gallant are owned and trained by R. H. Buttrick at Hinds, and they carry the same colours as Peggotty. RICCARTON NOTES STONYHURST MARES (Special ro Daily I'iNies) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 30. Continuing the policy of the last few years, seven of the Stonyhurst Stud mares have been sent away this season, to be mated with outside sires. Three have gone to the Inglewood Stud, North Canterbury, on a visit to Solicitor-General They ore Babel, by The Ace from Scrimmage; Stout Heart, by Winning Hit from Equipment: and Robbie s Mistake, by Psychology from Lovelock. To South Canterbury on a visit to Paper Slipper have gone High Rank, by Day Comet from Sailor’s Hope; and Winsome Hind, by The Ace from Wild Hind. Two have gone north to the Grange Stud, near Wanganui. where Fast Passage, by The Ace from Sailor’s Hope, will be mated with Phaleron Bay, while Good Sight, by Winning Hit from Equipment, will be mated with Broiefort. When Guilder went home very lame after a gallop a few weeks ago it was thought she was suffering from tendon trouble but F A. Nelson considers it was all due to the ricking of a muscle in her hindquarters. The Paper Money mare has made a good recovery, and she is “amg exercised on the roads. Nelson is also working Box On, a five-year-old Hunting Song gelding. He was formerly trained by H. Nurse, for whom he had one race, without showing any form. The Australian-bred gelding, Ripley, has been taken in hand again by F. A. Roberts. after a spell. When racing in Sydney, he showed some good staying form, but though he galloped well on the tracks he disappointed in his racing here lasi season.'
F. Christmas has Grey Night working well, and this brilliant sprinter will win good races if he trains on. His three-vear-old half-brother, Big Game, by Friday Night, is a well-grown young horse, wlio shows promise of being a smart galloper. Royal Chiel continues to do good work, and with the racing lie will get at Wiugatui and Trentham he should be at his best for the New Zealand Cup. He is topweight. witli 9.0, but he must he treated as a likely candidate, as he ran fourth last year. Scold lias made much progress in the last few weeks, and she should be in good racing shape for the Canterbury Jockey Club's carnival next month. After heavy rain yesterday morning the weather cleared in the afternoon and conditions were pleasant for early work this morning. The plough was not fit for galloping after the previous day s soaking but No 1 grass track provided good going There was some smart work, mostly sprints. ?;oyal Chief ran six furlongs in Imm IGsec, the last four in 50sec, just beating Iceland Spar, who brought him home. Capricious was not hurried over a mile She is coming on nicely Retrogression went well while doing five furlongs in Imin 3sec. There were a lot of Half-mile sprints Wild Fox did the best in «8 4-ssoc, Winning Rival beating Shikari narrowly in 49 3-ssee. Don't Forget took 50sec. Lockit 50 3-ssec. King’s Toast 50 3-ssoc. Wardress 51 l-ssec. Blue Bouquet and As Required 51 3-ssec. Full Pitch and Great Flight ran three furlongs up tire back in 30 3-ssec. Rain set in again during the breakfast interval and spoilt conditions for late workers. The track became heavy and
there was not much serious galloping. The half-yearly meeting o£ members ol the Canterbury Jockey Club was held today, when 10 new members were elected. At a meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club, held to-day, the distance of the two hurdle races at next month’s meeting was altered from about one mile and three-quarters to one mile and three-quarters and 50 yards. At letter was received from the New Zealand Racing Conference amending the safety number at two starting barriers, the nine furlong events being increased from 23 to 30 and the two mile from 22 to 24. A donation ot £SO was made to the Tramway Patriotic Committee's appeal to help furnish the new Welcome Club at to-dav’s meeting of the Cahterbury District Committee. Two programmes were passed—South Canterbury Jockey Club on October 19. and Hororata Racing Club on December 14, at Hororata, A gentleman rider’s certificate was recommended to D, J. Selby, and a trainer’s licence to H. G. Shaw. South Canterbury DUNEDIN SPRING MEETING ft is a rather interesting fact that everything engaged in the Churchill Handicap won last season except Capricious and Glenora Boy. Roy Bun won seven times. The Raker six. Sparkle four, Swordstick, Sir Hugh, Peony Rose, and Night Pal three, Passaform and Straightdell two, and Winning Rival, Petersham, and Settlement one race during the season. Glenora Boy showed some form by finishing third in the Geraldine Cup. According to some ideas Capricious would be considered harshly treated in giving more or less weight to frequent winners, but her placed form contained more merit than the winning form displayed by the rest of the field. Last season Capricious was second eight times and third in two races out of 17 starts. In her first placed pex-formance Capricious was third at the Grand National meeting with 8.11 to The Wrecker 8.12 and Windsor Chief 9.9 Shanghai Lily beat her twice at Geraldine. At the Wellington spring meeting Colonel Bogey 8.0 beat her by a head when in receipt of 81b. At the Banks Peninsula meeting Wine Card 7.2 j won from Capricious 7.0 and Swordstick 7.5 over a mile and a-quarter. and then came her second with 7.4 in the New Zealand Cup to Yours Truly 7.1. In the Metropolitan Handicap Centrepoise 8.7. Norseman 7.9, and Capricious 7.11 filled the places Capricious 8.1 was second to Sparkle 7.3 in the Dunedin Cup, and then came four unplaced performances. The Wrecker 8.8 beat Capricious 8.4 in the South Canterbury Handicap, when the unplaced lot included Settlement 8.2 and Night Pal 7.1. Capricious was unplaced in the Birthday Handicap and finished the season by running second with 8.2 to Balmenter 7.11 in the Provincial Handicap. She meets Sparkle on 31b better terms than when the Southland mare ran home four lengths in front of her in the Dunedin Cup, and has nothing in her favour as Sparkle won full of running. Passaform was third at Geraldine to Petersham and Swordstick dine to Swordstick and Petersham over nine furlongs. He now meets Swordstick on 71b better terms Passaform will probably improve more than Swordstick or Petersham Winning Rival 7.12 won from Glenora Boy 7.8 and Sovereign Lady at Ashburton, when Swordstick 8.3, Petersham 7.7, and The Raker 7.5 were unplaced. She now meets Glenora Boy and Settlement on 101 b, Swordstick on 71b worse terms, and Petersham on even terms. On paper, both Glenora Boy and Settlement hold a good chance of beating Winning Rival on the form displayed at Ashburton Peony Rose gave Straightdell a stone and a beating when she ran second to Waltoru bn the third day at Riverton. She now meets Straightdell on 21b better terms Peony Rose 8.2 was second to Wild Career 8.0 in the Riverton Cup. In the Winton Cup Peony Rose ran Sparkle to a short head, and now meets the Dunedin Cup winner on 161 b better terms. Peony Rose 7.6 ran much below the expectations of her admirers in the Dunedin Cup won by Sparkle 7.3, and ori 31b worse terms the latter should again finish well in front of her. Roy Bun was fourth in the Geraldine Cup, and at Wingatui meets Petersham on Swordstick on 41b Glenora Boy on 21b. and Passaform on lib better terms. The Raker meets Straightdell on 41b worse terms than the weights carried, in the Kurow Cup, and reads better than those following him in the list. Allowances may be claimed in connection with the race, for which acceptances are due on Monday next.
