GREEN ISLAND BOROUGH
MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Green Island Borough Council was held last night, when there were present, the Mayor (Mr G. A. Orange) and Crs T. McAhan, J. Gallery, F. Johns, T. Mason, T. Robson, J. Boomer, C. R. Freeman, and T. Tomkins. Water and Lighting The Water and Lighting Committee reported that a visit had been paid by the superintendent of the Dunedin Metropolitan Fire Board (Mr R. H. Price), and he had made various suggestions for giving the borough added protection against fire.—The superintendent's recommendations were adopted, the most important of these being the erection of one or two weirs in the Kaikoral Stream at the Runciman street bridge, so that a reservoir might be formed for the use of the fire brigade. Reserves and Cemetery On the committee’s recommendation, permission was granted to the Green Island Cricket Club to use two wickets on Miller Park at a rental of £2 2s per wicket It was also decided to proceed with the erection of a band platform in Miller Park at an estimated cost of £23. The question of the site will be decided at a future meeting of the committee. Finance On the recommendation of the Finance Committee, accounts amounting to £1505 4s 8d were passed for payment. The Minister of Housing wrote advising that further sections would be purchased in Green Island for the erection of State houses. Drainage i The application of Mr P, S. Gray to discharge his storm water over an adjoining section was granted during the council’s pleasure. It was decided to advise the Green Island Bowling and Tennis Club that no funds were available for the installation of drainage. The matter of turning the overflow from the race near Bayley’s Tannery into the sewer for flushing purposes was left to the engineer. Public Works Advice from the Main Highways Board that it would not be possible to seal the Kaikorai Valley highway this year was received.
The district engineer, New Zealand Railways Department, wrote proposing to install a large culvert at Beattie’s property, Main South road.—lt was decided that the council should inspect the site with the engineer-foreman. It was decided to complete the paving and concreting of water tables on the Main South road between Owen street and. Quarry .road, -and .also to extend the kerblng and channelling in Emerson street to Mulford street. The suggestion to kerb in wood the footpath in Thoreau street past Mulford street was approved. The request by Mr A. R. Vivian for the reconstruction of the fence and path In front of his property was agreed to.
