JAPANESE OFFICER WOUNDED VIRTUAL MARTIAL LAW SHANGHAI, Sept. 30. (Received. Oct. 1, at 1 a.m.) Virtual martial law has been proclaimed at Hongkew and- the Jap-anese-occupied portion of the International Settlement following an attempt by a Chinese gunman to assassinate a Japanese military officer who, it is reported, was seriously injured when lie was shot. The Japanese increased the military street patrols in Hongkew and have intensified the searching of all ingoing and outgoing persons.
