CHARGE OF MURDER
THE MANUNUI TRAGEDY ACCUSED BEFORE THE COURT (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 30. His first appearance in the Police Court since he was remanded after arrest was made to-day at Auckland by Charles Harold Longley. charged that at Manunui. near Taumarunui, on September 22. he murdered Jeremiah O’Sullivan. On the application of the police, Longley was remanded to appear at Taumarunui on October 7. Jeremiah O’Sullivan, a married man, aged about 50 years, was shot dead at about 4.30 on the afternoon of September 22. A bullet from a .22 calibre rifle entered his right eye. The dead man, who had a family of three children occupied a cottage on the Taumarunui racecourse property at Manunui. He grazed cows on the property, but had received notice from the owners, the Taumarunui Borough Council, to vacate it. O’Sullivan owned a cottage about a-quarter of a mile from the racecourse, near the domain, and, with the intention of occupying it himself, he had notified the tenant to vacate his property O'Sullivan visited his property, and while there he met his death. The police arrested O’Sullivan’s tenant. Charles Harold Longley, a married man, aged 39 years, an invalidity pensioner.
