CIVIL SERVANTS
I PROTEST AT APPOINTMENTS I ACTION OF COMMISSIONER Resentment has been expressed by civil servants (states the Dominion) regarding the practice of the Public Service Commissioner, Mr T. Mark, in approving the appointments of temporary officers at a higher salary than that received by permanent officers. At the last meeting of the executive Committee of the Public Service Association a resolution was received from (he Palmerston North section protesting against the commissioner’s action in advertising for temporary clerks for the State Advances Corporation at higher salaries than are paid to officers in other departments who have all the qualifications necessary for the positions, and urged the executive to make a proles) to the commissioner. A letter was also received from the Auckland section protesting against the vacancies not being advertised in the official circular, and advocating that every opportunity should be given to those at present in the public service before advertising lire positions. The executive decided to register a protest with the commissioner against the non-advertising of the State Advances vacancies and the Industries and Commerce, Tourist and Publicity Department positions in the official circular, and also to raise with him the unsatisfactory position created by making temporary appointments in the Stale Advances Corporation, thereby prohibiting permanent employees in lower grades being appointed to the positions and depriving them of the right of appeal.
