DECREASE IN BIRTHS FEWER MARRIAGES RECORDED The number of births registered in Otago during the past month was 140, representing a decrease of 12 compared with the number recorded during September, 1939, but the aggregate of 1165 for the nine months ended yesterday was well over 100 above the total number registered in the same period last year. The 77 deaths registered during the month represented a decrease of 17 on the number recorded in September of last year, and the nine-monthly total was 771, compared with 847 for the same period in 1939. There was a sharp falling-off in the number of marriages registered during the past month, compared with last year, the figures being 73 and 116 respectively, but the aggregate for the past nine months. 783, was over 90 better than that for the same period last year. The total was 91. The previous highest monthly totals were 90 in August and 90 in January, 1938. For the quarter there were 268 births, compared with 202 for the same period last year.
