Keportts of meetings ot branches are requested but they should be furnished promptly, for the publication of reports that are not supplied within a week from the date of the meeting cannot bo promised.
On Thursday last the members of-the Eveline Institute held its monthly meeting in the Majestic Theatre, when Mr K. S. Williams (manager) gave an interesting talk on the development of motion pictures, describing his travels in Australia with the one-time popular magic lantern form of entertainment, when the charge for admission was threepence and the taking of £1 would be considered a good night. Mr Williams also described the defects which had been overcome during the years of progress, and the magnificent equipment of to-day. Mrs Robertson, who presided, moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Williams, and also to Mrs Williams for supplying the facilities for dispensing afternoon tea. It was decided to contribute £1 to the leper fund. Mrs F. Familton was appointed delegate to the half-yearly council meeting, and Mcsdames A. Keith and D. Taylor were appointed trustees for the new piano. The hostesses were Mesdames Hay. Familton, J. Burns P Hughes Amies, and Miss Hartley. ¥ ¥ ¥ The Waitaki Bridge institute and Red Cross held a combined meeting in the local hall on Wednesday last. Mrs - Fulford (president) occupying the chair. Mrs Brownton was appointed delegate to the meeting to be held at Oamaru. Mrs Brownton won two first prizes and Mrs MacDonald a second prize in competitions. Mesdames Fulford and Mountford were the hostesses * ¥ * A meeting of the Milton Institute was held on September 20, Mrs Gray (vice-president) presiding in the absence of the president through illness. The motto was “ There are no taxes on smiles to-day. but they pay big interest,” and the roll call. “ How my head can save my heels.” A donation of £3 was sent to Wellington headquarters for the War Fund. An interesting address on “ London ” was given by Mrs Greigson. The competitions resulted: —Jumbled groceries —Mesdames Ulver and Maxwell (equal) 1; bloom —Mesdames Ulver 1. Seed 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Bowie. Donnelly Herbert, and Seed ¥ ¥ ¥ The Waikouaiti Institute held its monthly meeting on Wednesday. Mrs Gilchrist presiding. The motto was “ The secret of happiness is courage.” and the roll call. “ Should husbands help in the house?” The competitions resulted: —Spring flowers—Mrs Simmons 1. Mrs C. Aitcheson 2; bloom— Mrs Simmons 1. Mrs C. Aitcheson 2: savoury mould—Mrs Austin 1, Mrs Leckie 2. Money for soldiers’ parcels was sent to the Patriotic Guild The hostesses were Mesdames Toomey. Steedman and O’Connell. ¥ ¥ ¥ Mrs Taylor presided at the monthly meeting of the Awamangu Institute held on Wednesday. The roll call was “ Hints on poultry raising.” A, competition mannequin parade resulted;— Mrs Taylor 1. Miss Fraser 2. Miss H. Allum 3. The sum of £l2 was given to Red Cross Funds. Mrs Welsh, of Pukeawa. spoke on her travels through Scotland. Mrs Smollet was in charge of the social half hour, and Mrs J. Cochrane was hostess.
