MUSIC STUDENTS’ CLUB

INAUGURAL MEETING The inaugural meeting of the newlyformed Music Students’ Club, which was held in Begg’s Salon on Saturday evening, proved an unqualified success. Already 70 members have signed on. and all are enthusiastic about the new venture. The club is open to all students studying with M.T.A teachers who have reached the age of 15 years and are of a certain standard of proficiency. The idea is to make music in each other's homes, to engage in concerted works and be given opportunity of performance at the monthly meetings which will be held. The high standard of the works performed on Saturday, the large attendance, and the enthusiasm shown seem to suggest that the club will help to fill a long-felt gap in the musical lives of these gifted young people. Mr G W. Johnstone, as president of the M.T.A., delivered an interesting address on the aims and objects of the club—goodfellowship, music making in homes, performance before audiences, and the advancement of the cause of music in all its branches. Miss Thelma Thomson was elected honorary secretary and treasurer. Mr C. Roy Spacktnan moved a vote of thanks to Mr Johnstone for his part in launching the club so successfully. The initial programme was greatly enjoyed, and was as follows:—Trio, “Andante Grave ” and “Allegro ” (Lachner), by Ailsa Poulter (violin), Walter Metcalf (viola), and Rai McNicol (piano); piano solo, “Prelude and Nocturne” (Palmgren), by Helen McCaw; aria. “Aria from Fedora” (Giordano), by Donald Ross (accompanist. June Holmes); piano solo, “Arabesque" (Schumann) by Marion Allen; violin solo. “Cavatina” (Raff), by William Laing (accompanist. Irene Adamson); songs. “Death and the Maiden” (Schubert) and “Oh! Could I but Express in Song” (Malashkin). by Blanche Errington (accompanist.
