ANGLING SEASON
OPENING TO-DAY PROSPECTS VERY BRIGHT MOST STREAMS IN GOOD ORDER With very few exceptions, all the trout-fishing waters in Otago and Southland are in the most promising condition experienced in many years, and anglers are expected to find the opening of the season to-day fully satisfactory. Last week a lour of the district indicated that all waters were in f he best of order, but later reports of rain in the back country have placed a different complexion on some streams. The Mataura and the Pomahaka, for instance, are now stated to be a little discoloured, though there has not been sufficient rain to cause a significant rise in the level of the water. For the rest, all the streams to the south are expected to offer excellent sport. The Wyndham, Mimihau, Waipahi. Waiwera, Waikawa. Waikaia, and Kahika are said to be in the best condition ever experienced at the start of the season, and the Gatlins rivers and streams are reported to be carrying not only more trout, but better trout, than ever. A resident on the lower reaches of the Molyneux states that large numbers of fish have been seen going upstream. and in the upper reaches iie Clutha River is, at its best. The Shag and Waikouaiti Rivers are carrying excellent fish, and are low and clear. They will be fly streams, but to the good angler should be unusually attractive. „ All the waters of Central Otago—the Upper Taieri, the Lindis, the Teviot,' the Fraser, and the Manuherikia —are all ready, and the dams of Manorburn, Poolburn, and Naseby. the Roxburgh Lagoons, and Lake Onslow are accorded a similar description. Travelling restrictions will probably cause Dunedin sportsmen to concentrate on. the nearer waters to a great extent, but the attractive nature of the prospects further abroad will probably attract many who would, in a poorer season, refrain from going afield on the chance of a heavy catch.
