QUEEN CARNIVAL
— —— I KEEPING EXPENSES DOWN" AIR FORCE EFFORT GENEROSITY OF SUPPORTERS The fact that the generosity and hospitality of the people of North and South Otago were saving expense and ensuring the economic conduct of the effort was stressed by Mr A. C. Cameron when, making his report to the Air Force Queen Central Co-ordin-ating Committee yesterday. Mr Cameron referred to the remarkable enthusiasm shown by the people of the country districts during the recent tour of the queen (Miss Mary Pratt). Mr Cameron said that in many places dll members of the party were billeted, and in other cases the hotels would make no charge for accommodation. This was greatly appreciated, as all travelling expenses- in connection with the official party were either being borne by- the members themselves or by members of the Co-otdin-ating Committee, The two cars conveying the party were private cars, and the running expenses, including petrol, were also being ;;paid for privately. vr'' H. .'Several of the maids of honour, said lilr Cameron, hack 1 travelled long distances to be present at functions at their own expense. In addition to this a friend of Miss;Mary Pratt had given a handsome cheque to help with expenses. but it was the intention of the committee tp 'hand this over intact to the Air Force:,’Queen funds. Mr Cameron added that it seepied necessary to mention these i facts because of malicious rumours circulated by irresponsibly , people who did • not realise the damage dohe to a worthy cause. ■■ ;: • , r x, .-'■•VVf.X As he went refund the Cameron added,- he had been asked repeatedly - what the organisatidivof the carnival was costing. Invariably his reply had been that as far as tne Air Force Queen was concerned the secretarial work was'being..done in an entirely honorary .capabHynmesSi's Davidson and Main giving .their, full-time services for two months without remuneration of any kind, the. use of the office was granted free,, the various offices suppsrting.the Air 1 Force Queen were helping with the services of typists, and disbursements such as printing, advertising, and the of concert parties to ebuntry districts were being kept to an absolute minimum. If anyone could devise a more economical' method of raising the £50,000 : aimed at by The Air Force Queen ' Committee • he. would be very happy to learn about it. ■ Mr Ivo Carr said he hoped that publicity would be given to Mr Cameron s remarks, as he had come; in contact with similar criticism. Some, people seemed to be under the impression that the quden and her maids , of honour were being, frocked gt-the expense of the -funds, whereas'mis,--was ' not case.. Neither the funds: nor. the committee members were making any contribution in this connection either directlv cr. indirectly. . y Mr, Carr's remarks were endorsed by other speakers. -j ,g 1 . REHABILITATION FUND appeal for donations Elsewhere in this - issue ; Otagq Qdeen Carnival, Executive makes an! appeal for straight-out donations for Otago’s own £IOO.OOO Rehabilitation Fund. It is emphasised that Otago’s fighting men expect that Otago will do its duty, and that duty is plain. Otago did not fail during the last war because it was known that the money was needed, and it is claimed}.hat Otago will-not fail on this occasion because repatriation money is already being granted to men and to dependents of members of the Second' New Zealand Expeditionary Force. As time passes money will be needed to a greater extent than , before. The numerous Queen Carnival activities provide ample opportunity for providing the money necessary fittingly to rehabilitate our maimed and warshattered fighting men when they return needing financial assistance. Mr R, D. Stewart, hon. secretary, Otago Queen Carnival Executive, Box 84, Dunedin, will accept the smallest, or the largest, straight-out donations.
