RACING AND TROTTING
THE KUROW MEETING THE RAKER WINS CUP SILVER STREAK SUCCESSFUL FINAL EVENT TO AIRLINE The Kurow Jockey Club's meeting was held on the Oamaru racecourse in fine but cold weather, and attracted a good attendance. The track provided excellent going, and, despite a liberal use of the scratching pen, the financial returns show a considerable increase on last year's returns. . Green Gables began smartly in the Trial Stakes and led all the way. Dranoel was running last in the early part of the High-weight Handicap, but finally got up to beat Sir Hugh by a narrow margin. Passing By won the Waitaki Trot with a good deal in hand, as he raced away at the finish. ... Five of the 10 on the card for the Kurow Cup dropped out, and Petersham started a good favourite, and good support also came for The Raker. At the distance Straightdell, Petersham, and The Raker were racing in line, and the lastnamed stayed on best. The winner showed a rather marked improvement on recent form. Spearthrust had to be ridden out to come from last to first in the Hydro Hack Handicap. Prince Ruenalf's saddle slipped about 60 yards from home, and M. Billington wa§ dropped, but fortunately without meeting an injury. A surprise was in store in connection with the Munro Handicap, as the somewhat ancient Silver Streak raced away in the run home, and despite being the outsider of the field, the winner was greeted with rounds of applause. After leading to the straight in the Hakataramea Trot, Sabu bore out and carried Irish Dusk with him to the edge of the plough track on the outside of the course. The stewards reversed the placings of the first two horses. The card was concluded by Airline scoring well in the Gillies Hack Handicap, although his rider rode with a broken stirrup leather. The card was concluded well up to time, and during the day £13,561 10s went through the totalisator. as against £BOBI 10s at last year's meeting held on the same course.
