WEST COAST DREDGES

GENERAL STOPPAGE OF WORK SUNDAY RATES IN DISPUTE (Per United Press Association) GREYMOUTH. Sept. 29. A general stoppage of work occurred to-day on the West Coast dredges following the decision of the Dredge Workers* Union at the annual meeting yesterday to take a stand against Sunday work. The union works an ordinary week of 48 hours and Sunday work in'additiion. making altogether 52 to 58 hours. Whereas the pay for Sunday is time and a-half till mid-day and double time thereafter, the union points out that Saturday work in other industries is paid extra rates and considers that the Sunday rates in the dredging industry should be better.
