RACING AND TROTTING

October 26, 28.—Gore R.C Acceptance A payment for the New Zealand Cup is due on Friday, October 4. Dunedin Spring Meeting Handicaps for the first day of the Dunedin spring meeting are due on Tuesday next. Nominations On Friday next nominations are due for some of the principal events to be run at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Town Trained Two of those engaged in the Trial Stakes are trained in Dunedin. These are Irish Colleen and Poetic, who ran fourth at the Otago Hunt meeting. Two Engagements Quite a number of horses are engaged in two races at . the Kurow meeting, and probably a miss in the first engagement may mean a second attempt later in the day. Flame Queen The Siegfried mare Flame Queen, who is engaged at the Kurow meeting, won four, times last season and was placed 11 times ’in 23 starts. Three of the wins were. scored at West Coast meetings. Lord Midas " Loifd Midas ' figiires as a colt on the Kurow card, but was gelded last season. He had a good turn of pace, and won twice in the early part of the season, but afterwards lost form. This season he has run three times unplaced. Muscatine The three-year-old filly Muscatine, who is engaged at the Kurow meeting, failed to show up in her race at Geraldine. She won as a two-year-old in the D.J.C. Juvenile Handicap, run in soft going. Finis . Royal Minstrel, who was owned by Mr C. P. Haldane, of Hastings, ran his last race at Marton. He broke a blood vessel during the running of the open sprint, and in spite of veterinary aid he died that evening. Rowley Hatch R. E. (Rowley) Hatch, formerly one of New Zealand’s leading jockeys, and later training at Awapuni, has been appointed stipendiary steward to the Gippsland district (Victoria). Hatch has been in Victoria now for some years, where he held a trainer’s licence. An Australian Loss The three-year-old Halifax, by Christopher Robin, for. whom SOOOgns had been refused, has been destroyed. He was galloped on in a race, and the tendon ox a hind leg was completely severed. At Wlnton At a meeting of the Winton Jockey Club is was decided that the stake money for this year’s annual fixture be the same amount as last year. The surn of £2llO will be distributed over the two days’ racing, and the events on the programme will remain unaltered. Gold Salute A report from the Randwick tracks states that Mr Alan Cooper’s horse Gold Salute bled while doing a recent gallop. Gold Salute, .who is in J. T. Jamiesons stable, is engaged in the principal spring

handicaps. He has proved a costly investment for Mr Cooper, who is probably j the only man who had such an exagger- 1 ated idea of his value. Two-year-olds A couple of two-year-olds figure in the Trial Stakes. One is Lady Nuffield, by Paper Money from Attractive Lady, the dam of Lord Nuffield, and the other is Verlagia, by Vermeer from Pelagia, by Chief Ruler—Rupture, by Kilbroney. A Problem The problem for owners in connection with the handicaps for the New Zealand Cup is not the figures, but the task of getting a rider who can go to the scales at under eight stone and do justice to a horse. More than half the field has “ nothing to carry,” and a capable lightweight, could command a good fee for his services. Portadown Amongst those engaged at the Kurow meeting is a grey filly named Portadown She is a likely-looking sort, but in her first race at Geraldine failed to show up Portadown was got in England and foaled at Elderslle. She was got by Portlaw from Doretta, by Pommern—Folly, by Sundridge—Absurdity. Folly is a sister to Absurd. Remarc r . < The Western Australian galloper, Remarc, who recently won the Goldfields Newmarket Handicap, seven furlongs, at Boulder, carrying 9.12, in the record time of Imin 25 3-ssec, has come into favour in Melbourne for the Caulfield Cup, in which he has 6,10. It was announced at the week-end that Remarc, a five-year-old horse by Marconigram (imp.) from Revere, would be going to Melbourne with that event in view. Important moves from Sydney for Gladynev, especially in conjunction with Pandect for the Melbourne Cup, resulted in that New Zealand horse maintaining his position firmly as second in popularity to Historian for the Caulfield Cup. A Well-bred Pair Mr J. M. Samson has two engaged in the Trial Stakes at the Kurow meeting Gold Nugget is a three-year-old chestnut gelding by Iliad from Gold Dress, by Hunting Song—Etoile d’Or, by Polydamon —Perle d’Or, by Multiform —Aura. The other is the three-year-old, My Sleep, by Iliad —Princess Argosy, by Halsi —Little Spitfire. Princess Argosy was a good mare, whose wins included a Great Autumn Handicap. The Trial Stakes Seventeen are on the card for the Trial Stakes at Kurow to-day, and the draw for position and ability to begin well become matters of importance. Green Gables, on her second to All Night in the Ohapi Handicap, will probably start favourite. Johnemby won and ran second at the Waimate Hunt meeting. These are the only two with form. It should not be a difficult race to win. Some of those engaged are bred on winning lines, but have yet to show something in public. Chirp Chirp will be making her first start this season if she appears at the Kurow meeting. Last season she won three times in the early part of tire season. Her final win was in the Hagley Handicap run at the New Zealand Cup meeting. In the Suburban Handicap Chirp 11.1 ran second to Lockit 9.3, and in the Hagley Handicap she carried 8.11 and won from Merry March 9.2, Kobi 8.1, and a dozen others. She reads nicely treated in the High-weight Handicap if in racing shape to take advantage of the opportunity. In her last placed perfbrmance. Chirp 8.2 was second to Swordstick in the Dunedin Stewards’ Handicap, when Master Dingle 7.13 was third. Battle Song The Irish-bred stallion Battle Song, winner of the Irish St. Leger. has arrived in Auckland and is being sent on to his new owner, Mr G. A. Kain, Gladstone Park. Orari; Battle Song is seven years old by English time, and he won races both in England and in Ireland. In addition to the St. Leger at The Curragh, he won two other good events as a three-vear-old, and he was also second in the Irish Two Thousand and Derby, the latter race being won by Raeburn, and third in the Ulster Derby at Down Royal, won by Black Domino, Battle Song is a brown horse by Spion Kop, grandson of Carbine, from Cradle Song, by Hurry On He is accompanied by two fillies. The three thoroughbreds were imported through the agency of Wright. Stephenson and CoLtd. TROTTING NOTES By Sentinel FIXTURES October s.—Methven T.C October s.~Thames T.C. Passing By Passing By, who is on a 3min 42sec mark in the Waitaki Trot, was second to Haughty at Geraldine, and traveled 3min 8 l-ssec over 11 furlongs. Manawal The Man-o’-War gelding Manawal, who is on 2min 59sec in the Hakataramea Trot, went 2min 50sec at Geraldine after suffering interference in the early part of the race. Increased Stakes In the event of division races being run at the Methven meeting, £6O will be added to the stakes for the Drayton Handicap and the Westward Ho Handicap, and £65 to the Mount Harding Handicap. The Methven Meeting ‘‘Far from being embarrassed we are highly delighted at the great list of nominations received for the meeting.” said Mr T. Harrison, president of the Methven Trotting Club, to a representative of the Press, “ and we only hope that every horse nominated will be an acceptor. We are fully prepared for all eventualities, and with the co-operation of the drivers and trainers, a three-division race will not present many difficulties. Already we have made arrangements for the quick despatch of horses from the track after each division, and the only man who may be troubled is the starter, Mr A. J. Hastings. It’s a matter we can leave in his hands.” " If. as is suggested.” continued Mr Harrison, ” the popularity of the club has become an embarrassment it further justifies the claims of the Methven Trotting Club for extra permits. Owing to the present condition of world affairs we do not feel justified at present in making further representations in this matter, but the justice of such a claim must be recognised by all. Even if we have to run a 12-race programme we are not going to mar the public’s enjoyment by allowing extended intervals between races.” Lawn Derby The fact that Lawn Derby has launched out on a stud career in Australia is of more than ordinary interest. Apart from the fact that Lawn Derby is the first horse outside America to break even time, his blood lines are of considerable importance to New Zealanders, and have quite an interesting connection with Southland. Lawn Derby was sired by Robert Derby, one of the greatest sires Australia and New Zealand have known Globe Derby, who had a mile record of 2min 8 l-ssec, has sired more winners than any other horse In this part of the world His family is a well-known New Zealand one, as he was out of Springheel, whose daughter, Buz Buz (by Charming Bells), left King’s Play, one of the best pacers raced in the Dominion in recent years. It is on his maternal side that Lawn Derby’s blood is of interest to Southland. His dam, Roselawn, was by Childe Wood, by Rlbbonwood, a son of Wildwood. Roselawn was out of Warvan, by Van Roy (a descendant of Chile’ Harold in male line), from Edith, by Piccaninny, a son of Startle. Another descendant of Edith was Misfortune, who has left a host of winners in Southland, and whoso daughters are at present being bred from in all parts. Edith, the third dam of Lawn Derby, was brought out to Southland many years ago, and to Stirling Lad she threw Misfortune. The latter Is better known as the dam of Nelson’s Victory, Carver Doone, Erin’s Fortune, Alva Lass, Fortune Maid. Dan McGrew, Dame Fortune, Mishap, and others. This has been a great winning family, and its connection with Lawn Derby is of some importance.

THE KUROW MEETING FIELDS FOR TO-DAY The fact that the Kurow Jockey Club’s meeting will be held at Oamaru will considerably assist towards the success of the card. Last year Thermidor 9.1 won the Kurow Cup from Silver Streak 9.0 and Master Dingle 7.5, with Swordstick 8.3 as the only other starter. A much stronger field figures on the card for this year’s race. There may be a shrinkage, as Hanlon, Sir Hugh, and Master Dingle are also engaged in the High-weight Handicap and may be sent after what seems to be the easier task. On recent form. Petersham will probably start favourite. He was a good second with 7.83 in the Geraldine Cup, and on the second day won the President's Handicap with 7.10 by two lengths from Swordstick 7.12 and Passaform 8.7. The Raker 7.5 and Nightdress 7.12 were amongst the unplaced lot. Petersham now meets Swordstick on the same terms, and should beat him again. Last season Petersham won the Elderslie Handicap with 7.11 from Nightcalm 9.2. and put up placed performances over six and seven furlongs. His form at Geraldine and the fact that he ran third with 7.7 to Thermidor 7.2 when she put uo a track record of 2min 12 2-ssec for 12J furlongs at Wingatui points to his chance. / _ Hanlon shaped fairly well at the Grand National meeting, but appeared to be moving a bit short when working on Thursday morning. Last season Hanlon 7.11 beat Master Dingle 7.10 J by a neck in 2min 11 l-ssec at Oamaru, and followed with a win over a mile and a-quar-ter at the Waimate Hunt meeting. Araboa would be favoured by a soft track, but raav shape better than generally expected Night Pal is in good shape at present, and mav dispute favouritism with Petersham, in fact, may be preferred to the Shambles gelding if well handled._ Last season Night Pal won over a mile and a-quarter at Oamaru, where he won the Gardiner Memorial Handicap with 7.0 from Settlement'B.2, Balmenter 7.1, Swordstick 9.0, The Wrecker 8.6. Nightdress 8.0, Sir Hugh 7.11, and Lazybones 7.4 made the field. Sir Hugh has shaped so well under welter weights that his mission may be the High-weight Handicap. He has, however, won over a mile and a-quarter Straightdell won twice last season, one win being over a mile, but he may be better suited in the Munro Handicap. Master Dingle is also engaged in the Highweight Handicap, and has an outside show over a mile and a-quarter. The Raker and Cymric would have to improve a great deal on recent form to be fancied. The Raker may return to his form, and at the weights would be dangerous. They may go for Petersham. Night Pal, and Swordstick. Haughty Winner with 9.7, or 2!b moie than he carried into a close second in the Winter Cup; reads a likely favourite for the T. A. Munro Handicap. He afterwards shaped creditably under 9.11 in the Selwyn Handicap. Toro Koura ran third on the second day at Geraldine in a fastrun race and should be improved by recent racing. Silver Streak’s chance depends on his condition. Boswell has not raced since last January, but would receive support if in racing shape. Combat would be better suited by the distance than was the case at Geraldine. Straighdell and Night Pal are also engaged in the Kurow Cup. Haughty Winner will probably start a good favourite, as he may obtain an allowance. Toro Koura and Settlement may be regarded as next best. The following may be amongst those fancied for their engagements:—

The betting will be under the win-and-place system, and horses likely to be well supported include :■*- 12.0; Maiden Handicap.—Durvach, Aberdovey, Flying Jay. 12.45; Kopuarahi Hurdles.—Midland, Devon, Little Ruse.

NEW ZEALAND CUP Royal Chief has been allotted 9.7 in the New Zealand Cup, or lib more than he carried into fourth place. His trouble consists in a difficulty in handling himself in a big field. Last year Yours Truly 7.1 beat Capricious 7.4 by two lengths, with Dictate 7.5 a length away third. Capricious has been sent up 51b, and Dictate dropped 21b. At the weights Yours Truly represented a tough proposition, and, as this year's field is not likely to contain anything so formidable at the weights, it points to Capricious being one of the first to come into favour. Capricious 7.11 was third in the Metropolitan Handicap, made a scrambling race by the tu s “ for position at the turn out of the straight. Sparkle 7.3 beat Capricious 8.1 in the Dunedin Cup, with Willie Win 9.1 a close third. Sparkle galloped away from the field and is well treated in getting a rise of onlv 41b, She won like a stayer, and, although meeting Capricious on 101 b worse terms than in the Dunedin Cup, must be considered as dangerous as the Nigiu Raid mare. Willie Win is dropped 3ib on his Dunedin Cup burden, and afterwards won the Great Autumn Handicap with 8.7 in 2min 32 3-ssec. His chance however, depends most on how he stands up to a preparation. Taurangi won the Waikato Cup. run over 11 furlongs in 2min 20sec; but, as she was produced only three times last season, may not survive a Cup preparation. The Buzzer put up four unplaced performances last season In the New Zealand Cup he was second with 8.3 to Arctic King 8.1, and third with 8,11 in the Metropolitan Handicap. In 1937 The Buzzer won the Auckland Cup with 7.6 in 3min 25 2-ssec and so has credentials as a stayer how ever, suffered defeat under 8.3 and he is another apparently not to ° sou % Yogi was a boom three-year-old last season, when he won four times was second four times and third twice m 18 starts. He won the Stonyhurst Handi cap at Te Aroha over a ml le « n d also over a mile and from Royal Appellant, who was giving 171 b, and now meets him on 181 b better terms for a neck beating Old Bill 9-0 beat Yogi 7.10 in the Autumn Handicap at Wehngton m the smart time of 2min 183 sec. Ad Auckland Yogi 8.0 won the Nolan Handicap in 2min 32 3-ssec. Royal Appellant 8.11 was fourth. Yogi finished the season with two unplaced performances. He will, no doubt, be amongst those fancied, but appears to have his full share of weig' t. Peerless went off last season when she put up four unplaced performances. She won the Great Northern Oaks and l New Zealand Oaks, and ranks as a sister to Yogi, and a slight doubt exists as to whether either of them will stay two miles They belong to the Eulogy family, more notecT for speed than for, stamina Siegmund is regarded as a stayer, and ranks as a Wanganui w’rc W Handicapin Repaire 7.9 won the W.R.C. Sly Fox was third in the Auckland Cup wit 8 1 and is nicely treated m receiving a drop in weight. It will be recalled that as a four-year-old Sly Fox won the Watkins Handicap and started favorite for the New Zealand Cup, but bolted with his rider and ran off the course at the home turn. He repeated the offence ffi the Fendalton Handicap. He lb. a Hunting Song, but stood up to 19 races last seasom towards the end of which he was un placed in eight starts. „ Sou £ d *" d re nreSlv Fox, on Auckland Cup Worm, repre senls danger. Te Kawiti won three times last season, and is bred to stay. At pres ent Capricious and Sparkle are re S ard< T as two good light-weights, and apparently as much entitled to favouritism as anything in the race. RICCARTON NOTES KUROW CANDIDATES (Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 27. Thirteen horses from Rlccarton stables were included in the list of acceptors for the Kurow meeting, to be held at Oamaru to-morrow My Ship and The Vulture will”remain at home, but the others have aI F. g( A. e Roberts has two. both of whom will be seen in the Trial Stakes. Gold Nugget has plenty of speed and the main doubt is whether he will stay. If he can stick on he may be in the picture. Portadown, foaled here but with an English pedigree, showed up at Geraldine, and she should be much improved now. She shapes as if she would stay, and she should be in the money K Sutherland’s Rora Hiko, who is in the Trial Stakes, has not had a race since he resumed work, but he has done some smart gallops lately. Verlagia, also in the Trial Stakes, is the two-year-old filly by Vermeer, trained bv J. W. Pankhurst. She Is the most forward of the juveniles, and she has been in work since she came home after the Trentham sales, and she shows speed. Entail will be hard to beat in the Htghweight. He ran a very good race at Ashburton, without any luck, and he only needs to remain sound to ensure him a successful season. Flame Queen has been working well, but a mile in the High-weight event may be a trifle far for her, though she will be better later on, when she has had more racing. , , .. Captain Bruce has never been better than he is now. He is a good galloper, who can stay, but he is not reliable.. C. C. McCarthy will have three of his team racing—Dranoel is in the Highweight and the Hydro Hack, He should go well whichever race he contests, as he showed useful form at Geraldine. Cymric is ambitiously placed in the Kurow Cup, even on the minimum. He is also in the Hydro Hack, with better prospects, though he has shown no form lately. He has done some good work, however, and he is due for early improvement. Haughty Winner has not had a race since the Grand National meeting, and though he looks well he has had no searching trials lately. Lord Midas has had three races this season, but in none of them has he shown his best form, so there is nothing recent to commend him for the hack sprint. H. Nurse is keeping on with the task of educating Aggravate as a jumper. Ridden by A. Stokes, he gave another good showing this morning over the , pony hurdles. The first foal by Wild Chase has made its appearance at the Stonyhurst Stud, where the Winning Hit —Rivalry mare, Rival Shot, a half sister to Winning Rival, has produced a colt tcv the Paper Money horse. Wild Chase is being freely used this season, as he will be mated with some of the good Stonyhurst mares. Owners of mares in different parts of the South Island are also taking full advantage of his services heing available to the public. I learn that Mr L. C. Hazlett, of Dunedin, has arranged to have several of his mares mated with Wild Chase, while Mr D. J. McDonald is another Otago breeder who will patronise the Stonyhurst horse. THE FOXTON MEETING (Special to Daily Times) WELLINGTON, Sept. 27, Good fields are carded for the spring meeting of the Foxton Racing Club, to be held on the club’s own course to-morrow. There is a large number of fresh horses engaged. The track will be in first-class order, and the going should be fast Betting will be win and place. The Maiden Race has been divided as follows; —First division: Arachne, Blue Border, Dawn Parade, Loyal Queen, Midola, Oralti. {social Credit, Sanction. Swing, Vacation, Phyto, Vivid Night. Second division: Courting, Locrian, The Monarch, Master Lackham, Blab, Onahau, Parchment, Royal Vision. Sweet Anne. Sir Rabbi. Victoria all 8.5.
