MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Taieri County Council was held at Mosglcl yesterday, there being present Crs G. Stevenson (chairman), C. Findlay, J. Gow, J. Sutherland, T. McMillan, J. Wither, W. Nlchol. F. Howell. Correspondence The district Public Works engineer (Mr P. Keller) advised that the following amounts had been provided for in the Main Highways Estimates for 1940-41 for highways under the council’s control, the subsidies being £3 for £1 unless otherwise stated: —Mosgiel-Middlemarch-Dun-back, maintenance, £2400 (subsidy, £4 for £1) and £2000; Mosgiel-West Taieri Church, Improvements, £606; OutramBerwlck, maintenance, £450; OutramPetrle’s bridge, renewals, £3OO (no subsidy); Dunedin-Duke’s road railway station, maintenance, £800; Green IslandTaierl Mouth, maintenance, £750; Kye-burn-Middlemarch, maintenance, £200; Gladstone highway, maintenance, £100: Gladstone hWhway-Eiccarton-Wingatui corner, reconstruction and survey. £2520; Allanton-Outram, maintenance, £2OO. —Received. The Dunedin branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society wrote applying to the council for financial aid, preferably in the form of an annual grant for three years. It was stated that hitherto no public appeal had been made for funds in the council’s district, which was included in the work of the society.—Received. William Gilmour (Kaikoral) wrote requesting the council to repair the road leading to his property.—Left to the inspector and the member for the riding. J. M. Stewart (Caversham) applied for improved acces to his property at Brighton.—Left to the inspector. E, Taylor applied for access to his property at Brighton and complained of the gorse growing on adjoining sections,— Left to the chairman and the Inspector. John Deans (Lee Stream) requested the council to attend to the road at Lee Flat bridge, which was very rough.—Left to the Inspector. I. Cox (Middlemarch) wrote asking the council to attend to the drain in front of his property—Left to the Inspector and the member for the riding. The secretary of the Strath-Taieri Cemetery Trust wrote requesting the council to form a parking area on the road opposite the cemetery gate.—Left to the inspector and the member for the riding, with power to act. I. Graham (Hindon) wrote asking the council if it would agree to erect a light stock bridge over the ford at the Christmas Creek railway line.—lt was decided to repair the ford in the meantime. It was decided to support a protest sponsored by Mr C. A. Wilkinson, M.P., agaimst the proposed new legislation which would give the Arbitration Court power to regulate shopping hours and the day of the weekly half-holiday. The town clerk (Dunedin) wrote stating that a board had been set up in Dunedin for the reclamation of waste materials, and requesting that the council establish a committee for the same purpose in the Taieri district.—Held over in the meantime. A circular letter was received from the New Zealand Counties’ Association, asking the council to make a contribution of £lO towards the alleviation of distress caused by the air raids in England.—lt was decided to make a grant of £lO,
