Mr P. Carr. M.P.. for Auckland West, who has been visiting Dunedin, left yesterday for Wellington. Petty-officer Maddocks, of Dunedin, who has been attached to the Royal Navy at Devonport, England, has now completed his training, and has been drafted to H.M.S, Devonshire. The Rev. B. C. Nottage, of the New Hebrides Presbyterian Mission, at present on furlough in New Zealand, has forwarded his resignation to the Missions Committee for health reasons. Reference to the death of Mr A. E. Jull M.P., a former chairman of the New Zealand Counties' Association, was made at the monthly meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council yesterday, and the members of the council stood in silence as a mark of respect. Messrs J. W. Munro, M.P., P. Neilson, M.P., and M. Connelly. M.L.C., left for Wellington yesterday to attend a caucus of the Government Party which is to be held to-day. Mr W. M, C. A Press Association message from Wellington states, that Mr James Lockie Stewart, of the legal firm of Messrs Sladden and Stewart, has been appointed Grand Secretary of the M.U.1.0.0.F., New Zealand, in succession to the late Mr A. G. Shrimpton. Northbound passengers by Union Airways yesterday were: Mr A. F. Myall. Mrs F. Clothier, Mr M. Sullivan, and Mr L. Sparrow for Christchurch, and Mr J. Donaldson and Mr E, P, O'Brien for Wellington. Southbound passengers by the afternoon plane were: Mrs J. Winefield from Wellington and Mr T Quirk from Christchurch.

The death occurred on September 2 (writes our London correspondent) of Mrs S. Pickup, formerly of Auckland, mother of Mrs G. W. Clinkard. JMr Clinkard. who was for five years New Zealand Trade Representative and Tourist Commissioner in Europe, with headquarters at Brussels, is now attached to the staff of New Zealand House.

Our London correspondent, writing on September 9, says that Major J. L. Dimond. a graduate of the Otago University. has been appointed ear, nose and throat specialist for the Northern Command. Mrs Dimond (formerly Miss Nancy Aslin, Dunedin), who is also a graduate of the Otago University. was a member of the Home Science Faculty Toronto University She is now doing voluntary canteen work and is an air raid warden. The Rev. W. H. Rainey is expected to arrive in Australia at the end of the year to act as Commonwealth secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society. His appointment is for the duration of the war. Mr Rainey is secretary for Western Europe, and was previously secretary for Venezuela, Colombia and ■ Ecuador. The present Commonwealth secretary is the Rev. P. W. Stephenson, who will resign when he is elected this month as Bishop of Nelson New Zealand.
