SOUTH OTAGO
BALCLUTHA The local court sitting on Wednesday was continued until 6 p.m. before Mr H. J. Dixon, S.M. Evidence was heard in two defended charges against W. B. Duff, for whom Mr Walter appeared. In the charge of allowing a foal to wander in Stewart street on September 7, defendant was convicted and ordered to pay costs (10s). The other charge was one of riding an unlighted bicycle in Argyle street, and a similar penalty was imposed. Claim for Damages James Harry Oliver Cross (Balclutha) v. Charles T. Sojomon (Benhar), claim £64 7s 6d, damages for allegedly negligently driving a car at Kaka Point on August 4, whereby there was a collision and the plaintiff's car was damaged to the extent of the amount claimed. Mr Walter appeared for the plaintiff and Mr Macdonald for the defendant.—After hearing evidence, the magistrate gave judgment for the plaintiff for £25. with costs (£6 15s). Borough Council Mr J. R. Copland (acting Mayor) occupied the chair at the meeting of the Balclutha Borough Council on Wednesday night. The treasurer's report showed a debit balance in the district fund account of £1176. The report was adopted, and accounts amounting to £BB3 15s were passed. Cr D. M. Henderson (chairman of the Reserves Committee) complained of vandalism at the water tower reserve and at the motor camp, where even the seats had been removed from the lavatory.—A letter was received from the town clerk, Dunedin, on the subject of the reclamation of waste material. It was decided to ask the Patriotic Committee to undertake the work, the council to co-operate. It was decided to donate £2 2s towards the New Zealand Crippled Children's Society. Dunedin. A letter from the Christchurch Tramway Patriotic Committee asking for assistance towards the Soldiers' Welcome Club was mere!-- received. The local postmaster (Mr A. P. Watson) wrote on the subject of the post office clock affixed to the outside of the building for the convenience of the public, which had been stopped for some weeks past. Although in the care of post office officials, the department would not be responsible for the repair and maintenance of the clock.—Considerable discussion followed, and it was pointed out that the council had never purchased or assumed responsibility for the clock, which had been installed when the new post office was built in 1912. There was nothing on the minutes to show that the council had ever assumed the responsibility for care and maintenance. —It was decided that the Acting Mayor and the town clerk wait on the postmaster and explain the position, and, failing a satisfactory answer, that the matter be referred to the Postmastergeneral.
