MARKETING OF EGGS

10 THE EDITOB

Sir, —Once more we bow our heads to bureaucracy and civil servant control irWthe latest egg steal. In Dunedin on Friday, September 20, eggs were worth net to the producer Is 4§d per dozen. Under Government control on September 23 the gross price was Is 4d per dozen, which will give the producer approximately Is lid —truly a wonderful help to the egg producers. Possibly the reason for the smaller returns is the fact that another army of inspectors is about to be let loose to see. amongst other things, that every hen is a unionist and does not produce eggs outside the 40-hour week. What of the country storekeeper 40 or 50 miles from a depot? Will the eggs from his district be railed in for grading, and then railed back? We see the same thing every day— more Government control, more waste and less efficiency. Once the Government steps in, efficiency steps out. If the primary producers of this country do not wake up they will find themselves reduced to the level of serfs, lorded over by dictatorial Government officials whose decisions will be final. The producers are slowly but surely being crushed by the stranglehold of Sovietism. Our sons are going overseas to stamp out dictatorship, yet in our own country there is no freedom of thought, freedom of action, or the right to map out our own destiny. What a mockery! —I am, etc., Poultry Farmer.
