OTAGO HARBOUR BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otago Harbour Board was held last night and was attended by Messrs J. B. Waters (chairman). R. S. Thompson, J. Preston, A. Smith, W. R. Clarke, A. Campbell, M.L.C., D. F. H. Sharpe, F. E. Tyson, J. W. Munro, MP., R. Walls, J. H. Duncan, D. Copland and W. Begg. Financial The bank balances showed a credit of £19,595 3s 2d. Subsidised labour The Standing Committee recommended for approval the report submitted by the engineer stating that advice had been received from the Labour Department that the work at Mussel Bay upon which Port Chalmers waterside workers were now employed was now finished, and advising that work could be found for about 20 men for three to four weeks on levelling and cleaning up the Boiler Point sections ,provided that a full wages subsidy was obtained. The recommendation was adopted. Appreciation The Standing Committee reported having received a communication from the Marine Superintendent of the New Zealand Shipping Company expressing his appreciation of the attention given during the recent docking of an overseas steamer. Purchase of Bricks The Standing Committee recommended for approval the purchase of a quantity of " Cellinsulate " bricks for the tug Dunedin and the dredge Otakou boilers at an approximate cost of £6O The recommendation was adopted. Maori Centennial The Finance Committee reported having considered a request from the Otakou National Maori Centennial Committee for a donation to its funds, favourable consideration of which had been previously promised. It recommended that the sum of £75 be given for this financial year and that a further donation, with a minimum of £75, be made next year. The recommendation was adopted. Arrivals and Departures The following is a summary of the arrivals and departures for the month of AugustArrivals—Dunedin and Port Chalmers: Coastal. 41 vessels, 21,443 tons: intercolonial. 6 vessels, 8671 tons; overseas. 4 vessels, 19,787 tons. Total. 51 vessels. 49.901 tons. Departures—Dunedin and Port Chalmers: Coastal 39 vessels. 20,628 tons; intercolonial, 6 vessels, 8671 tons; overseas, 7 vessels. 40,687 tons. Totals. 52 vessels. 69.986 tons. Revenue Figures The statement of receipts for the 11 months ended August 31 showed a total of £160,570. The figure for the previous year for the similar period was £ 187,495 Imports and Exports The total tonnage of cargo imported and exported for the 11 months ended August 31 was given as 402,936 tons. For the corresponding period last year the total was 441.643 tons. !' Time of Meetings Mr F. E. Tyson moved in accordance with notice: (1> That all previous resolutions of the board relating to the days and times for holding the ordinary board and standing committee, meetings be hereby rescinded; (2) that (a) the monthly meetings of the standing committee be held on the second last Thursday in each month; (b) the monthly meetings of the standing committee be held at 2 p.m.; (c) the ordinary meetings of the board be held at the conclusion of the monthly meetings of the standing committee. (3) That the day and/or time of any monthly meeting of the standing committee or any ordinary meeting of the board may be varied by resolution of the board or in case of emergency by the chairman of the board. After a lengthy discussion clause 1 was rejected by 7 votes to 6 votes, and as a consequence the remaining clauses could not be proceeded with.
