TAIERI COMPETITIONS
FINAL SESSION The Taieri Competitions Festival was continued in the Coronation Hall. Mosgiel, last evening. This was the final session of a series of six, and was well attended. The Rev. G. Densem presided. The following were the results: — Tap Dancing (nine and under twelve). Seven entries—Miss Beverley Wix 1, Misses June Tregilgus and Ngaire Holland (equal) 2, Miss Lorna Prattley 4, Miss Rose Ledgerwood h.c. Also competed: Master Gerald Geddes and Miss Mona McGregor. Recitation, Humorous (16 and over).— Miss Mollie Crossan, "A Tragedy of the Fifth." The only competitor. This item was worthy, of a larger class, said the judge. The winner had a flair for humour, but should try to develop the lower, notes of her voice. Operatic Dance (nine and under twelve). Seven entries—Miss Beverley Wix 1, Miss Helen Fraser 2, Miss Ngaire Holland 3. Also competed: Miss Beryl Price, Miss Hilary Mason. Miss Mona McGregor. Miss Eleanor Gregory. Recitation, Humorous (under 12). Recalls from Saturday evening—Miss Velma Lobb 1, Miss June Tregilgus 2, Miss Audry Geary 3, Miss Esme Garland v.h.c. The judge said the winner had a good sense of humour, and was a very promising performer. The competitor placed second was a very clever child, but her selection was too old for her. Dance Duo (under 14). Four entries —Misses Helen Fraser and Ngaire Holland 1, Misses June Stewart and Shirley Stewart 2. Also competed: Miss Hilary Mason and Miss June Tregilgus. Recitation, not humorous (18 and over). Three entries—Mr D. Mitchell 1, Mrs Dorothea Wornall-Smith 2, Miss Mollie Crossan 3. The winner gave a nice restrained performance, and is to be congratulated. The competitor placed second has a beautiful voice and good enunciation.
For the one-act play there were three entries.—Green Island Women's Institute (two entries) and the Mosgiel Players. The results were: Mosgiel Players. " Suppressed Desires," 1; Green Island Women's Institute, "Come to the Ball," 2; Green Island Women's Institute, " O Let Him Pass," 3. The judge said that the evening play was a very good performanceone of the best she had ever seen in Mosgiel. In the report of Wednesday evening"s session the placings of awards were not correctly given in the two following classes:—
Operatic Dance (under 9).—Miss Joy Scott 1, Misses June Stewart and Shirley St»wart (equal) 2, Miss Tui Bain 4. Action Song (under 12 recalls from Monday evening) .—Miss Joan Mclnnes 1, Miss Betty Applegate 2, Miss Hilary Mason v.h c, Miss June Tregilgus h.c. The president of the Dunedin Competitions Society (Mr D. Standage), in a brief address, conveyed greetings to the local society. He mentioned that Dunedin had seen 39 years of competitions as against Mosgiel's eight. He congratulated the Mosgiel committtee on the success achieved and expressed the hope that future competitions would be equally as successful.
The chairman sooke a word of thanks fo'alt who had assisted in any way, makjn« soecial mention of the work of the judges. The demonstration concert and prizefivip" will be held n»>xt Thursday, when the Mayor (Mr W. P. Hartstonge) will preside.
