Mr Guy Tapley returned from the north yesterday. Mr James Begg was a passenger for Wellington by the through express yesterday. Mr D. Ritchie. Conciliation Commissioner, travelled to Invercargill by the afternoon express yesterday. Miss H. Black, physical welfare officer left on her return to Wellington by the through express yesterday. Dr R J. T. Bell left yesterday by the through express for Wellington to attend a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Senate of the University of New Zealand. Mr Bruce Smith left for Wellington bv the through express yesterday to attend a conference in connection with the establishment of the Home Guard. Messrs F. W G. Miller, secretary of the Southland Automobile Association, and Mr D. A. Dunn were passengers by the through express yesterday, from Invercargill for Christchurcn where they will attend a meeting of the boutn Island Motor Union. It was no'ified in the Gazette last night that Messrs 11. C. Beuke, C. J. Boyes, K. J. Hoylake, S. O'Hara, and B T Rowling had been appointed members of the Hop Marketing Committee. Sir Ernest Roberts, of Rangoon. Chief Justice of the High Court in Burma, arrived at Auckland by the Monterev from Sydney on a short visit to New Zealand. Mr Justice C. M. Murray-Aynsley. a Judge of the Suprente Court of the Straits Settlement, arrived at Auckland on a visit to New Zealand. Mr F. G. Farrell has been nominated unopposed as president of the Automobile Association (Auckland) for a fifth term, and the appointment will be confirmed at the annual meeting. He has been a member of the association for 30 years, and has served on the council since 1920. Sir William Perry and Messrs H. D. Acland. L. Mac Lean, and G. C. Warren, representing the New Zealand woolgrowers have been appointed members of the New Zealand Woo] Council. Messrs A. F. Bell and N. Rowling have been re-appointed members of the Tobacco Board. Mr C. M. Paynter, manufacturers' representative, and Mr M. H. Thorn, growers' representative, have also been appointed to the boardThe Otago Hospital Board, at its monthly meeting last night, appointed Drs M. McGeorge. J. V Cable, and D. U. Strong as senior assistant medical officers at Dunedin Hospital. Drs S. G. Aitken and C. S. Moore were appointed the junior assistants. Dr Aitken to be resident pending the appointment of a resident medical officer Northbound passengers by the Union Airways yesterday were: Messrs R. R. Laidlaw, J. D. Simpson and T. A. Quirk for Christchurch, Messrs W. Haslemore, J. Spring, Mrs J. Spring, and Mr H. Halliday for Wellington, and Mr J. Sanderson for Auckland Southbound passengers by the afternoon plane included Colonel T. H. Bell from Christchurch The announcement of the retirement from the presidency of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association of Mr R Browning was received with regret by the Management Committee of the association at a meeting on Wednesday evening, and the chairman (Mr J Mercer), moving that his valuable services to the game be recorded, said he hoped Mr Browning would continue to serve the association in other capacities. Mr Browning was secretary-to the association for 15 years, and is a foundation member of the Wilding Park Committee. He has been president since 1937.
