SINKING OF EVACUATION LINER NAZI REPORT TRUE TO TYPE (By Wireless) DAVENTRY, Sept. 23. An official statement issued in Berlin says that German naval and ail units attack only armed merchantmen, and claims that the British reports of the sinking are designed to arouse world sympathy and to bring the United States into the war. The London press, while regarding the attack as a typical example of Nazi methods of warfare, emphasises the importance of carrying on with the evacuation plans. The New York papers all stress the magnificent conduct of the children. "They faced tli2 ordeal like men," says one paper, " and sang as the ship went down." PRECAUTIONS IN EGYPT MARTIAL LAW DECLARED (Bv Wireless) f DAVENTRY, Sept. 23. Martial law has been declared in Egypt as a precautionary measure. GERMAN AIR RAIDERS ATTEMPT TO REACH LONDON (By Wireless) DAVENTRY, Sept. 23. Large formations of enemy planes tried to reach London this morning by three routes —over the Kent and Essex coasts, and from the Thames Estuary. Four were brought down by British fighters and one by antiaircraft fire over the Isle of Wight. Nothing was heard of the raiders over London, although there were occasional bursts of fire from the ground defences. These formations of German planes are reported to have been led by a new type of giant fourengined bomber, in comparison with which the Messerschmitts were mere dots in the sky.
