OBITUARY

MRS W. R. PERRY The death occurred last week after a long illness of Mrs W. R. Perry, an old and esteemed resident of the nortn end of Dunedin. Born at Coatbridge, Scotland, in 1856. Mrs Perry came out to New Zealand in the sailing ship Nelson, and for the past 62 years she had resided in Dunedin. In 1880 she was married by the late Dr Stuart, of Knox Church, to Mr William R. Perry, and for 60 years they lived in Cumberland street. Mrs Perry had a pleasing personality, and will be remembered for her many acts of kindness to those in less fortunate circumstances than herself. She is survived by her husband, one daughter (Mrs R. McDonald), and two sons (Messrs W. J. and V. Perry). MR A. W. OWLES Mr. A. W. Owles. one of the bestknown residents of New Brighton. Christchurch. died on Saturday evening at his home, at the age of 92. He had lived at New Brighton for more than 50 years, and took a prominent part in the life of the borough, of which he was once Mayor. Born in England in 1848, he ran away to sea at the age of 12. He made several trips to New Zealand, including three in the ship England, and voyages in the Charlotte Gladstone, Scimitar, Rangitiki and Orari, and made a trip Home in the Waimate. In 1878 he came out in the first tug Lyttelton. Leaving the sea in 1887. Mr Owles settled in New Brighton, where he remained till his death. He was a commercial traveller, and for 32 years represented Messrs Speight and_ Co., of Dunedin, on the road, retiring m 1931. His interest in sport was so keen that he was either patron, life member, president or vice-president of almost every club or organisation in the New Brighton district. . a . Mr Owles was a member of the first New Brighton Borough Council when it took office in March, 1896, and, with the exception of a short period, was a member until his death. He was Mayor in 1928 and 1929. He was a member of the Rawhiti Domain Board and for many years a member pi me Lyttelton Harbour Board and trie Christchurch Domains Board. He was a director of the Royal Humane Suciety and a vice-president of the Royal'Life Saving Society (Canterbury Centre) Among other offices he was patron, president and life member of the New Brighton Trotting Club He was a member of the Otago Commercial Travellers' Association and a foundation and life member of the Canterbury Commercial Travellers Association. Mr Owles was twice married. His first wife was Miss Rebecca Shannon. Geraldme, and the second Miss Ann Louise Davidson of Christchurch Three daughters and four sons are living, and there are seven grandchildren. Mr George Owles a son a well-known Otago footballer and a member of the police force in South Africa, was accidentally killed in South Africa in 1927.
